I have a VGA (female) to DVI-A (male) adapter but nothing is displaying in the monitor. When a connect a straight DVI cable it does display. Any suggestions?

One monitor just has a VGA connection. The other (which does work) has a DVI. My GPU only has two DVI ports.

Try swapping the connections around on the graphics card.

Depending on the graphics card only one of the DVI connectors may be DVI-I and so carry an analogue signal.
