DVI-D to DVI-I?

Hey. I've recently built my first computer from scratch, it's all working fine except I can't connect the monitor to the GFX. I've got an XFX Radeon 6850 which has two DVI-I connectors and two HDMI connectors. The problem is my monitor only has one DVI-D connector. Can you purchase a dual link anywhere? I can only seem to find DVI-D to DVI-D cables.

DVI-D stands for Digital Video Interface - Digital and has nothing to do with being dual link or otherwise. DVI-I includes all the pins and retains full compatability with DVI-D but includes additional analogue channels which you do not need to worry about. It is not unusual for GPUs to support DVI-I as these work perfectly well with standard DVI-D cables (single link or dual link) connected to the DVI-D port of a monitor. Dual link cables are thicker as they have twice as many data channels - but they still only have one connector head at each end. You only need one of these if your monitor is 120Hz or features a high resolution (2560 x 1440 or greater).

As PCM2 says above, DVI-I ports work fine with DVI-D. Therefore your DVI-D monitor can simply be connected to the graphics card (either of the DVI ports) using a standard DVI-D (male-male) cable.

As for dual link, you will only need to use one of these cables if your monitor is a 120Hz model or has a resolution of 2560x1440 or higher, otherwise you can just use a single link cable.
