I've been looking for a moniter for my gaming rig, I have a spare HDMI cable so It thought I might as well but a HDMI-input moniter, except they're priced over £100. My friend tells me that DVI can output HD, except it can't do sound. If that's the case, then I wouldn't mind buying a DVI moniter, I'll just buy the speakers/ headset seperately.

Just want to know whether DVi can output HD.

Thank you!

Yes your friend is correct, only difference between HDMI and DVI is HDMI carrys sound as well.

In fact 120Hz 3D monitors only use DVI, I've also just bought a Dell U2312HM monitor and that has no HDMI ports but still can display HD content at 1080 using DVI.

DVI-D is the superior option for quality as it can handle more traffic compared to an HDMI cable (aka Higher Resolutions). Personally HDMI is good for TV's and thats about it.

There's no difference in 'quality' between HDMI and DVI up to 1920x1200 @ 60Hz but dual link DVI will support up to 2560x1600 @ 60Hz or 1920x1080 @ 120Hz.
