DVI - HDMI

Ive got the 24'' DGM montior from here, and ive been thinking about the idea of getting an internal blu ray drive. But my only problem is that the DGM doesnt have a HDMI port, I know you can get DVI-HDMI adapters but would the picture still be in HD?

That's not the problem. The problem is does your video card and monitor support HDCP over DVI.
PC outputting 'HD' is never an issue. The encryption on the stream is.

It hasn't got HDCP. I'm not sure but I think you could use the VGA instead, or use a program to strip out the HDCP compatibility issue from the disks.

The program to get round HDCP is called "Anydvd HD". Its good but not free.

Care to explain how you found how my monitor isnt HDCP? Iam just intrested.

it isnt - ive got one. just use vga instead

note you will probably end up using anydvdHD anyway just to get some discs playing :rolleyes:

So would a vga - hdmi work? Or would I still need to use the software? Why use VGA over DVI btw?

no vga > hdmi wouldnt work, hdmi is digital. vga is analogue only.

it wont matter anyway if you use anydvdHD. but without it your sftware player will refuse to play the film over dvi or hdmi because the monitor doesnt support HDCP over those connections.

VGA is a weird one. HDCP isnt required over VGA so it would play fine. but there is always the threat (and nothing more atm) that the restriction flags could be switched on causing the software player to downscale the video before its passed to the display.

if you want to use dvi or hdmi....no, not without buying anydvdHD. if you want to use VGA yes, no problems.....for now, unless they decide to start downscaling video over analogue connections.

Yer buying anydvd hd isnt a problem, would work out cheaper than a new monitor.

So I could buy an internal blu ray drive, and then the software and connect my monitor to my gfx card via a VGA - DVI adapter as my gfx card only had X2 DVI connectors and that would work?

This bit confuses me tho 'Allows you to watch movies over a digital display connection' I thought you said DVI - digital VGA - analogue ?

no, hdmi is digital only. vga is analogue only but dvi can support both

thats how dvi > vga adaptors can work
