DVI or HDMI?

Just a quick query, which might seem elementary to you guys - if I have both HDMI and DVI outputs and inputs on my GFX card and screen, is there a particular benefit to either? I've always used DVI. Does HDMI downgrade or impair the image at all?

both are the same only dvi doesnt carry sound,if your monitor has speakers then hdmi,if not then dvi or hdmi whatever takes your fancy

If you're not using speakers integrated in the monitor, then use either. (HDMI if you are)
I'd use dvi because it has less of a tendency to fall out due to the screws.

If I may hijack for a sec...

I need a new card. My old card had two DVI outputs which I used to run two screens. I see many cards just come with one DVI output these days. Will I still be able to run two screens using 1xDVI and 1xHDMI ?

Anybody care to spec me a mid range (max £200) card that would suit my purpose?

Cheers

p.s. Ignore the spec in the sig. The GFX card is the same but the rig is now i5 based O/C'd to 4.4GHz
p.p.s Oh and nothing too loud, Ta.

You'd be better starting your own thread stating exactly what you want to achieve and what you use the PC for such as gaming and what types of games.

Also please fix your signature.

Only 4 lines of text are allowed.

You may use a signature (commonly used in email messages) in your posts. You can specify in your profile a signature to use at the bottom of your posts. When you post, there is an option to use your signature. A signature may contain one or more images but they must fit within a box with maximum dimensions of 400 x 75 pixels (width x height) and with a maximum (combined) file size of 20k. Images containing mostly very large words or animated .gifs will not be permitted. You may also add 1 consecutive lines of normal or smaller text directly above or underneath the image with no spaces inbetween image and text. If no images are used then up to 4 consecutive lines of normal or smaller text is permitted. Do not pad out your text lines with blanks lines. A line of text is defined as having a maximum length of 400 pixels. If you want to turn the signature off in the future, you can come back and edit your post. If you have specified a signature in your profile, the box will be automatically ticked for you.

With DVI you won't get the scaling issues which sometimes occur using HDMI.

Ahh, that was pretty much what I was getting at with my question, I just didn't phrase it quite so well!

The reason I asked the question was that my current card is a rather old Sapphire X1950, which has two DVI outs. I use a Dell 2408 as my main screen and have a Dell 1907 as a second screen. The 2408's DVI inputs have been on the blink for some time - that's a separate matter though - but it also has an HDMI input.

I'm about to start video editing and it seems that even a £50 GFX card might be far superior to my current card, although most that I've browsed seem to have 1x DVI and 1x HDMI.

As I also use the machine for photo editing I need it to be as accurate as possible in terms of display. Is there a definitive guide anywhere to whether I would experience scaling issues?
