DVI to Display Port Adapters / Leads - do they work?

I want to upgrade my GPU to a 3060 (or 360Ti) but my second monitor has a legacy DVI connector. It's hard, if not impossible, to find DVI support on current GPUs.

So I was wondering if the various DVI to Display Port leads and adapters you can get actually work, as in give a reliable, clear and flicker-free signal? It would be DVI at the monitor end, DP at the GPU end. My second monitor is an old Lacie Photon20 1600x1200 at 60Hz. Yes I know it's a relic, but I still value its colour accuracy and its a nice size as a second monitor on my desk. My main monitor uses DP natively.

Is this possible, or am I going to have to retire my trusty old second monitor?

DisplayPort to DVI work absolutely fine as long as you don't need either >60hz or dual link (e.g. for the early 4k screens) support.

We use loads of the small passive adapters that you then connect a standard DVI cable to

60 Hz max is fine and there's no need for dual link as resolution is 1600x1200. My main monitor is connected DP -> DP natively. It's this second monitor which only has DVI which I need to adapt to DP. I'll try out a passive adapter and see how I get on. Thanks.

An alternative is to use HDMI, most cards still have one, the cables and adapters are pretty numerous and usually passive.

I prefer using a cable myself, just because it is neater and doesn't hang off the end of the port.

Yeah the 3060 GPUs I've been looking at have 3 x DP and 1 x HDMI. Ok, so a DVI to HDMI adapter is a possibility too? Useful to know, thanks.

Be wary these cables unlike normal ones are omni directional (1-way).

So be careful not to get a dvi to DisplayPort/hdmi cable , when you actually will need a DisplayPort/hdmi to dvi cable - they are different and cant be used in reverse.
With cables they are listed as source first, then device second.

Ahh, so in my situation the GPU is considered the source and my old DVI monitor is considered the device? So I need a DP to DVI lead / adapter?

Thanks all. My current GPU has a spare HDMI port, so I could use that for testing and get a HDMI to DVI adapter and see how it goes.
