DVI to VGA?

Hi all I did a fresh install of xp on a friends computer but I used the dvi port on his gfx card and had the resolution set quite high but when he got it back he plugged in the vga cable and as a result he's getting nothing on his monitor, is there any way for him to reset the gfx settings so he can get the monitor to work rather than buying an adapter?

safe mode or vga mode (f8 on boot up)

Thanks for that ive given him a ring and told him to try f8, the only problem he's not very computer savy and he lives a long way from me. so fingers crossed
