Hi all. I really hope someone can help...

I've just completed my new build PC, but all I get is a blank screen. My monitor is currently hooked up to the VGA output on the motherboard, but should I be using the DVI? I haven't got a VGA/DVA converter at the moment. Is that why I'm not seeing anything? The fans come on, everything seems powered, but nothing!

Spec:
AsRock Z68M-ITM motherboard
Intel i7 3770 processor
8GB Corsair Dominator RAM (2133mhz)
128GB CRUCIAL S4 SSD

I'm currently using the i7's graphics until I save for a gpu. I've unplugged everything but the RAM and processor to try and get it to boot, but no luck. Any ideas?

On further research is appears that my motherboards BIOS needs updating to 2.1 from version 1.4 to run an Ivy Bridge CPU. Does this sound right? Would you expect to see a completely blank screen if the motherboard needs a BIOS upgrade to handle the CPU?

Any help appreciated

So do you have a 3770k then? Or another Ivy i7? It doesn't really matter, if the BIOS isn't the right version then the board won't be able to even get to the BIOS screen if an incompatible CPU is in the board.

I think I got the 3770. Not planning to do overclocking as its in a small case with no room for big cooling.

I took the processor out and tried booting and still got the blank screen. My question now is really this: is it normal to have absolutely no video output to a monitor if you boot with either an unsupported or missing CPU? If it isn't, then I'm thinking that my motherboard is actually faulty. If it is, then I'm relieved that a BIOS upgrade should sort it.

Thanks,
Mat

I have seen this problem before. THe problem you have is how do you upgrade the bios to support Ivybridge without posting using a sandybridge cpu?

That's right. I'm going to take it in to our local pc shop and use one of their sandy bridges. I'm just hoping that the BIOS is indeed the problem, and I'm not actually sitting on a dead mobo!

I believe but correct me if I am wrong, Z68 motherboards can ONLY support Ivybridge CPU's when an original Sandybridge CPU has been used first and then have updated the BIOS.
And are you sure your local computer shop will do that?

They said so. I'm off to see them now.

So is it normal to get a blank screen if the motherboard doesn't recognise an Ivy Bridge processor?
