My brother's computer has a VGA cable attached to the DVI slot using an adapter that came with it. Would using just a DVI cable make much difference in terms of picture quality?
Well, "much difference" is a relative matter. But if we're talking about an LCD monitor, then digital connection (like HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort) is always the best choice.
If it's a CRT monitor, then analog connection (like VGA) is the better choice.
VGA = Analog = More likely to have problems with interference.
A lot of monitors that have both VGA and Digital connections (such as DVI) also seem to do a poor job at converting the analog signal to something decent for the monitor.
If you think the picture is crisp now I'd say don't bother unless you already have a DVI cable. If you think mweh this isn't all that great then by all means spend 5 quid (or something along those lines) for a DVI cable.
