Just walking the dog round the estate early this morning, and saw a rather nice BMW parked outside a house with a clamp on the front wheel, I assume because of non payment of tax?
They must have gone out of their way to put it on because this is a nice estate in a village, quite a way from a main road.
Do they just randomly drive round in the night looking for cars or has a neighbour grassed him up do you think?
:D

I use to imagine they get flagged by ANPR that they’re on the road being driven and they pay a call to the RK.

However similar to your case, a mate of mine had a car clamped at his house that he’d taken home (he’s a trader). I don’t know where the V5 was registered too

Around our way they have a DVLA smart car that drives around the streets with an ANPR camera on the roof. Automatically pings them, and within a few hours a van turns up and clamps them. 3 clamped down the street next to ours on one visit. Seen it come around a few times now on the house CCTV.

This crew, do it on contract for them.

Not sure how it works but my GF got clamped back in April. She'd forgotten to tax her car.

Having moved in with me, she hadn't changed the address of her licence. Her car was orignally one of mine so was registered at my home but I didn't see the renewal notice.

Anyway, had to pay £100 to have it removed and GF thought that was the end of it. She recently received a letter from HMRC Tribunal for not attending her court date - pardon!!!

She was supposed to pay £85 fine together with the 3 month's tax she hadn't paid for. Shortly after the above letter, she got a demand from a 3rd party debt collector of just under £400.

She had to ring to check this wasn't scan but sadly it was the case. After a bit of back and forth, she still had to attend court. We went to court, all the trimmings etc judge, court personel etc.

Explained what had happened, court rang DVLA and said can we pay now? DVLA said yes, no problem. Seemed like a long way round to get sorted. If she'd been able to explain her position to DVLA and pay what she owed them it would have saved the hassle and money of the court proceedings.

Had my own car clamped in my works car park. The DVLA van comes round every few months and just drives round the car park with ANPR cameras on each corner.

Amazing how they have put all this resource into catching people evading car tax, when you can't get a GP appointment or police to turn up.

I dunno in general - but where I was living awhile back there was someone on the road whose flatmate was dobbing them in for not taxing, personally think they were dealt with quite leniently - I can't remember exact events now but IIRC they were given several warnings, then clamped, after which they paid for a bit, then finally the car was taken away to be crushed to much drama.

They only had themselves to blame, but were blaming everyone else and/or "not seeing why they should pay it".

They sent some contractors to my local area and clamped what seems like half the town. They even clamped cars left out awaiting repair/restoration from local garages etc because technically they had access to the highway. Silly really given the idle cars had no real consequence to the local community, especially as they were clearly not moved for a little while (but not abandoned).

So it seems to me they're now out on tour around the UK enforcing what they can.

Semi-related: I also saw a Facebook post by the DVSA stating they fined a tuning company for selling pops and bangs maps. Interesting take, I had no idea they enforced the sale of such things, however it does imply that any ecu modification or similar could be subject to scrutiny and fines. Could hurt some more business.

Good, I dislike them and see little point.

Yep and so they should, there has been warnings about decats and ecu modifications making cars illegal to drive on the road so it comes as no surprise they've begun to reinforce it.

Interesting about sports cats in the above. Of course the stupid over the top mods for pops & bangs (It's cringe just hearing and writing it) can get in the bin.

Interesting though, I'd have expected they would have only gone after the car owners only as it's them driving them on the road and ignorance has never been an argument against that. Couldn't tuners and suppliers get punished due to naive interpretation? The people who supply & fit them don't necessarily make them so how do you decide who should be punished and fined? I guess the answer is for them to clearly state these services are for off-road use only and put the onus on the car owner.

Imo sports cats are bit of a waste of money.
Yes, they’ll flow better and release a few ponies, but in all the ones I’ve fitted I don’t recall me ever getting one to pass the emissions test (although others in here have).
May as well just fully de-cat the car refit for the MOT, which is what I do on my car.
Agree with the above that “not for road use” should be stamped on the components, then it’s up to user whether they use them or not, but I guess it’s all down to type approval.

There's a car with one of those popping exhausts round here - he just drives around in the small hours annoying everyone. Think its a Saxo.
