Just had a letter from the DVLA saying I owe them £80 for failing to relicense one of my cars

thing is, I never got the original licence notification or the subsequent fine award
and the car has been off the road for the past 3-4 years anyway

I'm assuming that the verdict is ignorance is no defence, and the DVLA is legally allowed to toss its letters at the farce that is known as the post office and still fine me for having a busy life.

Is there any loophole to follow, or must I accept that the DVLA thinks I'm a feckless chav with an unlicenced car

yep, been here for 10 years.
It's irritating that I can't just say the engine is dead and could they leave me alone please.

I can't even remember birthdays, never mind worry about what is in the shed

Had this happen to me the other week, I sorned the ITR after it was wrote off and sold onto a scrapper last March. The sorn ran out this January and I received no reminder, cue 80 quid fine.

I wrote back to them stating I was instructed by the insurance company to SORN it and that would be the end of it, I mentioned the vehicle had been sold for scrap and I didn't have the V5 anymore (I do :p ).

A few weeks later another letter stating the end of the matter in these circumstances :)

Neil.
