Got a letter today from a debt collector, via the dvla saying I owe them for not taxing a car I've not owned for 18 months, sold the car via ebay (ended early as a guy made a decent offer). Filled the paperwork out posted it, heard nothing, then about 8 months ago I get a letter from the dvla saying I hadn't taxed it, I rang them, told them I had sold it and posted the paperwork off, I also told them at that time that I had changed my address, person on the phone said that's all I needed to do.

How many times do I need to tell them the same bloody thing???

Thing is this letter says even if I have sold the car I need to tell the dvla (again, 3rd time lucky) and still pay the 80 quid.. Now as far as I understand it my responsibility ended as soon as I posted the paperwork off, and the 80 isn't actually enforceable as its not a criminal offence and hasn't been through a court..

Anyone shed any light on what I can tell them to stick where?

You realise that it was probably lost in the post and your liability doesn't end until you receive the letter that confirms this right?

Telling DVLA if you sell your vehicle

Not what you're looking for? ↓ If you sell or transfer your vehicle you must tell DVLA straight away using the V5C registration certificate.

You and the buyer must follow the procedures correctly or you could still be liable for the vehicle.

Telling DVLA if you have your V5C registration certificate

If you have a registration certificate:

  1. Complete section 6 on the V5C.
  2. Sign section 8 on the V5C.
  3. Get the buyer to also sign section 8 on the V5C.
  4. Give the buyer the completed V5C/2 section.
  5. Send the V5C to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BA.
Selling to a motor trader

If you sell the vehicle to a motor trader you must:

  1. Complete the V5C/3 section.
  2. Get the details and signature of the motor trader.
  3. Post it to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BD.
  4. Give the V5C and uncompleted V5C/2 section to the trader.
Don’t rely on anyone else to send the V5C or V5C/3 to DVLA.

To see what counts as a ‘motor trader’ check the notes on the back of the V5C/3 certificate.
If you don’t have your V5C registration certificate

If you don’t have a V5C registration certificate write to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR giving the:

  • vehicle registration mark
  • make and model
  • exact date of sale
  • name and address of the new keeper
  • your signature
Make sure the new keeper sends DVLA a completed V62 form to apply for a new registration certificate. Otherwise the police could still contact you if they need to make enquiries about the vehicle.

Once DVLA have updated their records you’ll get a letter within 4 weeks confirming that you’re not liable for the vehicle any more.

You should have phone DVLA after 4 weeks to see what was happening

There is no legal requirement to check if they have received it, iirc mail is classed as delivered after 3 days by the dvla and the same rules apply for the public.

Dont get me started on this joke of an organisation. Its probably the worst, most unfit-for-purpose public department of the lot. Terrible management, terrible systems and terrible staff.

However as gov.uk states that you should receive a letter after 4 weeks and the OP obviously didn't it would be the sensible thing to do that way you have covered all bases

Actually your liabilty does end once you've posted the logbook. It is the standard defence to these dvla clowns. THEIR guidelines might try to imply you are still on the hook until they give you the all clear but you aren't.

The dvla don't make the law, they have to follow it like everyone else.

Think part of the problem is i also moved house in the middle of all of this, however i have spoken to them on the phone and told them i had moved as well as not having the car any more...
