DVR-MS to other formats

So I have a load of shows I've recorded off freeview using Windows Media Center and it creates huge files in this format.

My question is, how can I reduce the filesize and type so that they don't take up so much room and are easily played back on a machine? I.e. something popular like xvid etc. I haven't done this in a long time so I don't know which program would be best to do this, has anyone else attempted it?

An hours worth of TV is about 800mb, that includes adverts too. Is there an easy way to remove ads, I don't have much time to do it manually?

You can convert DVR-MS format to MPEG2 reasonably easily. From that it's easy to chop and change.

What format would you recommend after that? DivX? Or are they all pretty similar? Also, what software are you using to convert?

I find http://www.xpmediacentre.com.au/community/crunchie/2937-arksofts-crunchie-release-v1-1-a.html pretty good.

Go with whatever format you want. I tend to go to DVD.
There's is a multitude of software for converting - google DVR-MS convert
