Thing is those images are fairly basic, they just look good to people without much experience with proper astrophotography.

Yeah, you can't really get past some basic things like - the aperture, sensor size/type etc.

So this thing is compact ergo the aperture size is going to be limited. The sensor is a small CMOS sensor (like you'd get in a phone or cheap compact camera) though apparently one by Sony optimised for low light.

Fun toy for some "I love Science" types but I'm not sure it's offering much value - like if someone was really getting into astro photography they'd surely get a telescope (maybe second hand) and a DSLR and shoot in RAW or something no?
 
I don't need it small, but like, if for a couple of thousand £, I can buy a large box that sits in my garden with a WiFi controlled equatorial mount and camera, that I just lift the lid on for clear days and let me browse the night sky and make star trails, that'd be a toy I'd buy.

This is one thing I don't like about the idea of smart scopes. I really like to see the photons with my own eye(s). I'd imagine the app style of control feels a bit, I dunno... detached.

Definitely a fun toy though and I'd consider getting one alongside a decent scope and tracker because I haven't got a clue what I'm doing with a DSLR.

Show me a proper telescope for astrophotography that can do what these can do in a small form factor for the money?

Our campervan not motorhome is limited on space.

That would be me :)

It's a cheap way of sampling the hobby without spending too much. If I don't like it I havent lost a lot. Astrophotography can be a bit of a black hole for money.

The S50 can do some great pics of the moon and sun, no good for planets though. These are geared up towards Deep Sky Objects, galaxies, nebulae ....

But that's the point, it's the small form factor that is inherently limiting it.

If you've got a whole camper van you could equally just get a proper telescope, I mean you could do so even with a car and a tent. If you're going hiking or something then that's maybe more of a constraint on what you can feasibly transport.

It's all personal preference at the end of the day, if you're not fussed by the limitations of something like that and value the compactness more then that's cool, different strokes for different folks and all that. :)

It is limiting but thats the compromise. Last thing I want when I'm camping is to lug around a load of equipment and then spend time setting it up. If I like the hobby when I'm at home then sure I might get some better gear but that would be limited to home. It's a great introduction to Astrophotography for not much money and thats the whole point.

if you're happy w/ the purchase that's all that matters, personally i wouldn't touch it w/ a bargepole. i'd go to an astronomy forum/astrophotography board and do a spec-me thread.

I unsubbed from TF years ago, I didn't even know he was still going.

Some of his earlier videos were pretty decent, but he turned into such a pretentious fart huffer that I couldn't deal with the sound of his voice anymore.
 
$469 för a few months fun...
I don't think it's unreasonable.
Sure it's not awesome but jeez it's just a hobby toy that can take a few cool pictures I guess.

Nothing yet. The S30 is ok.

The Dwarf 3 is pretty good. I got to borrow one for a week.
