there's a fair few games that use DX10.

Bioshock
Asses Creed
FSX
WiC
Crysis
LotRo
CoJ
Zoompreme Commander

@willhub..

That's rather a sweeping statement, care to link me to a source or two that shows DX10 running slower than DX9 with the same graphical settings?

I didn't think so ;)

Assassin's Creed not out yet

Try Crysis, lose about 10 or so fps for same graphics level in DX10 over DX9

I'll benchmark when I get home.. I really doubt DX10 is slower than DX9 when it's rendering the exact same thing. This fact is highlighted by Asses Creed - it renders the same thing - no new effects - it just renders it faster in DX10.

Sure, it starts to slow down when you add new effects, like light refractions, god rays etc - but these are extra to what you get when running in DX9. FEAR runs faster in DX8 mode - is it because DX8 is better? No, it's because a pile of stuff isn't being rendered.

Apart from the benches I'll run later, do you actually have a source you can link us to?

You can't really show DX10 running faster or slower than DX9 with the "same" graphical setting, as commiting to either will mean that it can't be the same. But DX10 IS better than DX9 and WILL allow for more complex and more realistic looking scenes in games as soon as the hardware exists to back it up.

I'm sure I don't really have to point you to when DX9 was first released and the first DX9 capable cards ran the first DX9 supporting games disgustingly slow and didn't look very good with everyone happily saying "I'm sticking to DX8.1lol1l1ol!".

Also look at how DX10 is being implemented on games right now, as far as I know there is at present not a single game out that has been built from the ground up, from line #1 with SM4 in mind. They tend to make a very nice DX9 engine then slap a few DX10 rendering options on at the end, which really can't be a very efficient way to implement DX10.

Simply look at the specification difference between shader model 3 and 4 rather than some idiots posting Crysis screenshots with various configs to see where DX10 will be taken in a couple of years and how when it arrives DX9 will be a fleeting memory.

Put it simply, set your dx9 levels to "High" and bench it. Set you DX10 levels to the same "high" setting and bench it. You will see the difference is quite marked.

Yep.. you'll see the difference in both FPS, and in IQ.

DX9 high, and DX10 high do not render the same things.
DX10 isn't rendering slower, it's rendering *more*.

But don't worry, it's cool to be a hater.

No difference in Image quality and I am not a hater or fanboy. Simply stating a fact. DX10 runs fine in many games, just not Crysis. The game's not all that anyway. I much prefer STALKER.

Those modded crysis configs... suck. To lay it out, the crysis devs got it spot on with the shipped default graphics settings, and the defaults contain something that no single modded config I am yet to see provides; consistency.

All of them do one of two things:
- They focus on shadows, they mess around with a few other things but their focus is on shadows and contrast settings, as most people seeing the darker shadows and having various things stand out more = amazing graphics. Ironically almost certainly the same people who slammed Doom3 at the time for that.

- The uber all out config (CCC springs to mind) has tweaked every possible Cvar in the game to what they believe and what screenshots will deceptively have you believe, is perfection. But their is a major flaw in that they make things look amazing about 10 foot away from you but have cut out anything looks any good at medium-high distances, on balance looks worse than default due to the fact if you are in motion it looks awful due to these disgustingly noticeable occurances of shadows / animated objects appearing not too far ahead of you. Looks amazing for screenshots but not to be played with.

Yet still this has then people coining the "lol my xp0rz dx9 looks like your vistasux dx10" nonsense, it doesn't, and it never will... again read the spec differences rather than relying on some 15 year old's configed crysis screenshots to see how DX9 could never do what DX10 can no matter what Cvar you just tweaked.

Well so far most DX10 titles have been slower or equal to DX9 performance, look at bioshock, in DX10 that had no noticable difference.

And Spektor if you're trying to say Crysis configs suck then you're talking totall BS and have never tried them, I've tried these configs and it looks as good as very high and performs a lot better, sure it might no be very high, but if it looks the same as very high or better I dont think anyone cares...

the water was a bit more 3D.. but apart from that, you're right, DX10 didn't do much for image quality. It *may* have made for slightly higher fps, but I wouldn't know.

What does this show us, that DX10 is pap?
No, it shows us that the game wasn't made for DX10.

The lack of *omg check out my DX10 effectz* threads isn't down to DX10 being carp, it's down to the game designers not.. designing.

Saying that, I personally think the DX10 effects in Crysis are amazing.. specifically the water 'rainbows', first time I saw them I just sat looking at the water for a bit :D
