eventuraly im going to go to DX 11, probably a year or two away, but i will only run one card. will a 650w psu be enough? thanks

DX11 cards are not out yet, and no specs have been released. So who knows what the power consumption will be.

That said, a decent quality 650W PSU should be more than enough for any single high-end GPU in the forseeable future. If you're looking one to two years down the line you will probably have the option of a lower power consumption mid-range card anyway.

I'd like to know what the winning lottery numbers are this weekend if anyone can help

tbf though mate, a 650W decent brand PSU should be powerful enough to run pretty much anything bar possibly this:-

:D

nope, the 650W would be fine for that also, the only time you would struggle is with 2x 4870x2's, or 2x 295gtx's, even then a 800W is enough though 900W for "safety".

It will be more than 5 years before you'll need more than a 650W for a single card, it will probably be more than 5 years before you need more than 650W for a dual gpu setup. a 4870x2 only needs around 450W with a clocked quad core system so a 500-550W psu is fine.

AT a guess, the 5870 will use maybe 10-15% more juice than a 4870, and thats largely down to the fact that TSMC's 40nm process is a leaky pile of crap. Consider the 4770 on 40nm runs at 80W with 640 SP's, a 5870 with maybe 1280-1600 will run maybe 80-100% higher power, more sp's, higher bus, but not a whole lot more onboard logic then extra power leakage as the die gets bigger.

I would say 1500w is a minimum for entry level DX11 cards.

Add to that another 1500w if you want them in multiple card configurations.

Add another 1500w for Intel's new 16 core Nehalem.

Add another 1500w for failover redundancy.

So, 6kw should set you straight. :P
