I was reading that DX10 defines a new minimum specification with regards to hardware. With the 8800 being the first of the DX10 cards, I just wondered where the 8800 would be defined in regards to the DX10 spec. Is it a entry level DX10, mid-range DX10 or high-level DX10 card?

Definately Entry Level.

It's not entry level. No-one knows how harsh DX10 will be on hardware. Looking at the specs of DX10 it may actually run faster than DX9. Don't worry, the 8800 will easily play the DX10 games you will see released in the next 12 months.

Look at the 9700pro when that was released before DX9. It was an excellent card for DX9 for 1-2 years after its release.

Wow if that's the case.

I suppose it'll be worth diving in and getting a entry to mid-range DX10 card next year when the games (like Crysis, Alan Wake etc) all come out.

:o £1000 High end Cards on the horizon? lol

:D

Think £350 for a top end and £180 for a mid range are about the right prices for graphics cards. The 8800 will come down in price if it's entry level and the newer revisions come out.

I hope so lol thats sounds more like it :p

DX10 is:
1. miles away from major game implementation.
2: I think possibly better implementation of some effects, nothing too worry over as ....
3. its only coming with Vista, lots of people won't want to change from XP until they HAVE too, and that may be some time away ;)

By then graphics cards will have moved on so much that the 8800 will be classed as slow ;)

I just looked for some information about DirectX10, from what I can see there are no visual improvements apart from SM4.0?

If it's just a far more efficient way of rendering current things, it will be interesting to see how much it helps performance.

DX is just an API, its the games and hardware that count. The Radeon 9700 could be considered 'entry level' for DX9, but at the time it certainly wasn't entry level. There are slower DX9 cards than it out right now too. Same for the 8800, its the first DX10 card thats all. There will be budget versions of G80, those will also be much slower.

I was joking about the 8800 being an entry level card. Obviously it will be one of the first highend cards but I'm pretty sure Nvidia and ATI will release some entry level / mid range cards fairly soon after the launch of Vista. Like a few people of already said DX10 should breath some life back into the 8800 and combining that with driver updates should see a long life for the 8800.

Nvidia did say somewhere that with Vistas launch they will be fully ready with a range of 8XXX cards, as early up from the 8300 replacing the 7300GS cards:)

Am sure ATI will be ready as well.... Id assume both will release there full ranges in Jan just in time for Vistas launch....cos theres a lot of Manufacturer branded PCs coming with Vista in Jan so they should have entry level DX10 cards already in them.

So thats a lot of PCs with 8300 Geforces and X1X00s Radeons ;)
