Because if its not then my current rig will never see an upgrade for around 10 years. Because any future game playing will be done on a console. And already my machine is way over specced for web browsing and printing out spreadsheets, and in a few years time it will be great for playing all the "PC classics".

I will be waiting to see what the DX10 games are like. They had better be good to warrant me spending around £100-£200 on Vista to get DX10, another £200 to get a good DX10 gpu and probably another £200 for a new CPU as well (no doubt). That £500-£600 is a lot of console, isn't it...

Well, ive missed out on at least 2 upgrades of my computer and instead bought a 360 and HDTV costing about £780. The upgrades probably would have been about the same and im not thinking about upgrading my PC until DX10 titles arrive such as crysis.

There's no PC game, or games, currently that I want to spend any money on an upgrade for, so I don't think my PC will be getting any better in the next year and a half, it's just too much money for not very much use. We're only just getting DX9 games fully taking advantage of what it can do, and how long has DX9 been about now?

There's been around 7 DX10 images posted often I think, about 4 of them were pre-rendered/artists impressions (most notably the Flight Sim 2007 or whatever it's called one). To be honest Alan Wake is the only impressive looking game, not even Unreal Tournament 2007 looks impressive now (compared to you-know-what on the 360). Crysis looks good too, but 2 games do not warrant £800 (personal estimate) in upgrades.

I haven't upgraded my PC since HL2/Doom 3 were the dogs danglies and have also gone the 360 and HDTV route this gen. I don't think I'll be upgrading for possibly another year when Vista is nicely settled in complete with slippers and cup of tea, by then my Athlon with 512mb RAM and 6800GT will surely be ready for the bin :p

If you are referring to Gears of War you do realise its using the Unreal engine right?

I think that's the point he's making. UT2007 won't be groundbreaking anymore, because he's already seen it in GoW.

To the OP: My advice would be not to hold your breath. DX10 is not the holy grail of gaming; it won't suddenly infuse new games with innovative gameplay and intriguing storylines.

In the short term I will be steering clear of Vista as I don't have a DX10 card, only have 1gig RAM and am not planning on upgrading until I move to the DDR2 platform. I also have performance concerns and will be waiting to see some Vista/XP comparison benchmarks once drivers have matured. Even then, I'll likely not be splashing the cash for a new OS/DX10 card until such time as there is a genuine big difference in games.

I'm pretty happy with XP and the games available for it, it's great that we now seeing some fantastic DX9-class titles and aside from the innovative Wii I can't see myself getting a console in the next couple of years due to the plethora of brilliant PC titles.

I feel the same but i also haven't felt the need to buy a console although i have been tempted by the Wii. So I'm just waiting for the huge influx of PC games that will be out this time next year, in the mean time ill be saving some money :p
