No doubt this has been asked before but I am looking to upgrade my graphics card soon. I know the NV8800 is out but I hear ATI's version should be better - any ideas when it will be available? Indeed any schedules for new cards this year?

Yeah late March, early April, wether its better than the G80 though we'll just have to wait and see as no one knows. :)

Doubt it's really relevant as there will be an Nvidia refresh by then. No brand loyalty from me but the R600 better be something mindblowing TBH.

Well im gona guess at the midrange dx10 cards middle of the year as in july or after. Ati midrange cards about late Q3 2007.

Just guess based on nothing in particular.

Mid-range DX10 capable cards should be here earlier than that, at least on nvidia's side:

No information about mid-range r600-based products around though, at least that I've seen.

ATI seem to be behind on this one, nVidia are definately winning on the upgrade cycle.

Yup, gona be no good at all if the R600 turns out to be a couple of frames here or there faster than the GTX, needs to be another 9700pro in my book, or everyone will just say 'man after 6 months, is that it', and no one will care about their low/mid range cards coming. :D

Word in the pipeline (it was very briefly up on INQ and then it suspiciously dissappeared not long after) is that Nvidia will be releasing the 8900 (G81) series at the same time just to rub ATIs nose in it.

unfortunately I have nothing but hearsay to support this - but the rumour isn't that far-fetched.

However here is a R600 test - not sure if this has already been posted:

IMO depending on the pricing of both Nvidias 8900 and ATIs R600 offering we'll know if a comparison between the 8800GTX and the R600 is fair or if it will literally be a choice between it and the 8900. Assuming the price of the 8900 is similar (possibly a smart move on Nvidias behalf) the R600 might just get a bit of a trouncing.

Yeah that fake article about R600 has been posted before, it wouldn't suprise me if Nvidia released G91 around when R600 hits, they that far ahead they'll have it ready and waiting now, r600 will come out, and if its better than G80 by a fair bit then Nvidia will just go here have that then, and then it will take ATi another 6+ months to counter that. :D

Hope its more powerful than them. :D

Well with 6months more R&D time it better be...

nVidia are bringing out 80nm G80's tho so there will be a refresh on the horizon, usually with die shrinks come higher clocks...

They've been coming out with all these weird ram size numbers 768MB, 640MB. I'm not too sure they would come out with a Gig again, especially if DX10 looks for these numbers from within the API. No point in creating hardware with surplice memory if nothing is going to use it.

I think you missed the original joke
