Just wondering, will be building a new machine in August. By then I'll have saved up a good £1500-£2000, so I'll be able to make a bit of a beast.

Was tempted to go for a 7950, but what kind of time scale are we expecting DX10 cards to hit the shelves? Because if we're talking mere months, I may as well get a 7900GT as a stopgap and pick up a DX10 card on launch.

DX10 cards are due to hit end of Q4 2006 or early Q1 2007. I am personally going to wait till the second wave of DX10 cards to appear mid next year as I can only think of one game that has been announced for DX10 and that is Crysis. By the time the other DX10 games come out there will be a bigger and better DX10 card to power them. Just my opinion anyway :)

Hmm well if I do go for the 7950, I'll probably give the initial crop of DX10 cards a miss too!

A pain there's not really been much announced >_< I am sorta assuming they're trying to match the cards up with the release of Vista (and thus, DX10).

There are a few rumours going around about the release dates and specs of the new nvidia cards (a few threads down I think). But until Vista comes out there is no point at all for DX10 cards, and we all know that could easily be delayed yet again.

Just checked out the topic now (and the link inside). If the date of Mid 2007 on the link is to be believed, then I'll go for the 7950 without worry, since I wouldn't mind a GPU upgrade again mid next year...
HDCP is part of the factor for me too, since my machine will also be for all my HD media, but we'll see (especially as ICT has yet to be adopted).

I would'nt get a DX10 card on launch (G80), an operating system and 1x game does not warrant the hefty price tag of it, G90 the next one after that is supposed to be around May 07, even that will not be worth buying as that may have an operating system and 2x games before the next card comes along and superseeds it making that old hat, just buy now as the cards we have now have got donkeys left, just buy a DX10 card when theres actually stuff out using it, by which time G80, and even G90 will be well old hat, and welcome to the forums. :)

You are right of course Loadsamoney. Just was a bit scared that I'd blow a ton on a 7950, and find out the new cards are out just in time for Christmas or something... that would be a few months I wouldn't mind waiting.

But hearing the G90 isn't out until May at the earliest anyway pretty much clears my mind :)

Totally unrelated question, but I assume the 7950 will be yet another new card released without HDCP support? Gotta wonder what these people are thinking, given the HDCP thing is no secret.

the 7950 is a little way off yet anyway, so it will be easier to make up your mind when you actually come to buy it as there will probably be a lot more conrete rumours (lol) flying about about whats coming out when, and you can base your decision on that, also if your saving up £1500-2000....if you then decide to get a g90 dx10 card or w/e then you'll have like £3000 and can get an uber sli dx10 comp :)

It would be an uber SLi DX10 comp though with no DX10 stuff to use it for, what a waste of 3 grand. :D

Obviously, but in my opinion the current cards run DX9 games at high settings with no problem at all. :p
Yeah - but I would be buying for the games NOT out yet UT2k7, Quake Wars, Crysis (even in DX9 mode), CellFactor - I am sure all of those (as CellFactor has demonstrated - in fact I think at E3 they all demonstrated) that the current top of the line SLI/Crossfire setups are barely able to cut the mustard, add in hi-res and you're strugling.

Thanks for the replies guys, think I'll go for the 7950 GX2, and pick up a G90 sometime next year.

Got no interest in the G80, what with the G90 being released just after Vista anyway.

Slightly unrelated, but I assume my Seasonic S12 600W PSU will be ample the the system, which will hopefully be some form of Conroe w/ 3GB DDR2 800 and the 7950 GX2?
