dx10 thread - how important, changes, when, is my x1900xt tht jst bought dated soon?

Hi there

Ive noticed reading round the forums that a lot of you are all very eagerly looking forward to dx10 being released. And a lot of you have been talking about dx10 cards. Does this mean that all cards out at the moment will have to stick with dx9.x? Ive just recently ordered my new rig and along with it a HIS ICEQ 3 x1900xt 512mb. Will this card be dated in the near future with the release of dx10? or will it be compatible with dx10 and i'll be fine?

also could you please tell me when dx10 is coming out, examples of the changes it will bring, and if new cards are required, which cards these will be if anyone knows?

I think DX10 is out with Windows Vista near xmas time.

With pretty much all DX releases in the past, the first few fully compatible cards have not been fast enough to really use the extra features. So it'll probably be a few more months after xmas until some decent cards come out.

Also there wont be many games out at xmas that support DX10, this will take a while to come in as game devs want to support features that most poeple will be able to use.

Pretty much all these games will support DX9 anyway, as say half-life 2 can be run on a DX8 card etc.

it ties in with the vista release which i believe was put back even further yesterday(after jan 07), most of the first wave of DX10 games will also support DX9 hardware, and as stated the 1st generation of DX10 cards wont really justify buying one over your X1900, which will probably last you a good 8months to a year...

a lot of the effects are done in hardware so might not get top of line eye candy. but really its cards will be about 6/7 months away really and you will still be able to play the games

Yeah first wave of DX10 games will have a couple of (if that) DX10 effects bolted on, but will still run in DX9, if your x1900 is still throwing DX9 games around like nothing (which it will do), then theres no point going for a DX10 until more things use it, and that won't be for ages yet, as said above your x1900 has got ages left yet, DX10 games are not going to flood out, and as said the ones that do come out will have the odd DX10 effect bolted on.

How many DX10 games do ppl think are going to have flooded out by christmas 07, won't be many, and those will just be DX9 games with the odd DX10 effect bolted on as said, as no one is going to do DX10 games only as the DX9 market is huge, and they will lose out big time, and how many cards will have come and gone by then, yup loads as cards come out every couple of months, well have gone past all the speedbumped ones etc... the first batch of DX10 cards are going to be well old gen by then as well, id only upgrade to a DX10 card if i wanted the fastest DX9 card around, and my DX9 couldn't cut it today still, which will be cards like the x8 series/6 series etc... anyone with a top end card now would be daft to get the first lot of DX10 cards as their cards will still be throwing everything around as said.

Got an x1800 XT 512mb here, plays everything maxed out in 1280x1024 (TFT) absolutely brilliant, so if im getting say 80fps in a game, but a new DX10 card would give me say 90fps, then it would be pointless, as i can play games fine at 80fps, the DX10 card would give me an advantage of having the odd 1 or 2 DX10 effects, but still so what, nowhere near worth a whole new card, im not gona lash out £350+ just so i can have water that looks a bit better than what it does on my card now, or grass that looks a wee bit better as well, and on how many games is that going to be, exactly they won't flood out as said, and by the time there is a lot of things out there using DX10 more that its worth going DX10, loads have cards will have been and gone.

I think upgrading to DX10 just for the features that DX10 will bring would not be smart business.

I'm upgrading to the G80 or the R600 not for games in DX10 but DX9, but with the ability to play DX10 games.

I just hope these things deliver what we have grown used to over the last few years with each generation release of GPU's and thats double the speed of the last.

They wont be DX10 games though, they'll be DX9 games with the odd DX10 thing bolted on.
