DX10... time to upgrade or not?

Hmmm, what to do?

I currently have an XP drive that I boot into purely for playing games. I've got another drive with Vista on, that I use for all the boring Windows stuff. I've also got another drive with another XP on, that I use for boring Windows stuff because I'm not a big fan of Vista!

Anyway, getting to my point, as we all know the next batch of games due for release are DX10, i.e. Bioshock and Crysis. So is it worth buying an 8800 now and installing the games on Vista? I ask this because a few of the DX10 games have been hacked to work with DX9.

But will they look better in Vista with DX10? I have a 7800GTX at the moment, is it worth upgrading the card to a high-end 8800 or is the performance/cosmetic benefit just not that impressive?

You could wait until November when Nvidia releases new high end cards.
EDIT: DX10 hasn't been hacked to work with XP. Halo 2 and Shadowrun aren't DX10.

Bioshock, Crysis. & every other conceivable game released from now & for the next 2 years or so will be DX9 compatible. Though some as you say like the arforementioned Bioshock & Crysis will have DX10 coding implemented as well.
There are a far higher proportion of users with DX9 cards (like myself) than people with DX10 capable cards. So game developers have to code the game to work with the majority of users & so if there is a DX10 code they also have a second DX9 code at least. Half Life 2 is an example where even DX 7 & DX 8 hardware can play the game.

If you are having problems playing the games you want at the settings you want its probably time to upgrade, if not then hold on untill it is struggling & then get the best card for your pricerange.

I'd strongly advise you to hold of until November. Current DX10 cards are not DX10.1 compatible, but the next line of Nvidia cards will be. For that reason alone it is worth waiting a few months.

Considering current 'DX10-class' cards don't exactly do a stellar job of running DX10 applications (IIRC, some of rubbish ports from PS3, etc. and others only have a smattering of DX10 effects), I wouldn't bother until at least one more generation of cards goes by.

I may even put money on most of the current DX10-class cards being brought to their knees trying to play games like Crysis, Bioshock, etc. at anything above 1280x1024 with DX10 enabled.

In short? Get an 88xx/29xx series card for DX9, but don't expect to keep it for long if you plan on getting serious DX10 action.

First Dx10 game is out in 5 days and IGN ran it maxed out on a single 8800GTX at 1920x1200. (BioShock)

It's not the hardwares fault, it was just a case of waiting for a well coded game to come out that uses Dx10.

people saying theses cards won't run dx10 well, i would say just wait till Bioshock is out because that'll prove how well or poor theses cards will run in dx10. because to be honest u don't really know if it will run well or not...

Why? He said get a 88xx or 29xx series card for the best dx9 performance which is true...

he didn't say " get a 88xx or 29xx series card for the best dx9 performance"

he said "Get an 88xx/29xx series card for DX9".. totally different

I didn't even know there was a new Nvidia card... on the cards.

Any previews/reviews online I can have a look at? I'll certainly hold off buying a new card if they will be worth the wait.

In the meantime, I just hope my 7800GTX will run Bioshock without everything turned down.

Thanks for all the input by the way everyone.

its 8xxx/2xxx series cards not 88xx/29xx...

it really ***** me off when people only put 8800 or 2900 lol... :D

8xxx/2xxx includes things like 8600s/8400s... and they're proven to be shocking at gaming!

Wait and see how bioshock does i would think there will be a small difference between dx9 and 10,by all counts it runs well on a 320,
I would if i was you wait until the new cards at out in nov unless iyou want it as a stop gap like mine until then.

Not much news on them yet. But there wasn't much news on the G80s when they were coming out either.

As for waiting for the new G90s. Even if you cant afford one the prices of the G80s will drop considerably.

Also i doubt youll be able to run everything max. But do you really need to run everything at max?? Ive got a 6800 GT i cant remember the last time i ran a game at max that was new!

If you want to split hairs, I'm not fussed. The point remains, whichever way you decide to run with it.

For the worrying gratification of the pedants out there...

The G80 and R600 do a great job at all resolutions in DX9 with all sorts of IQ bangles and baubles enabled.

The G82 and RV610/RV630 do not.

None of them do particularly well in DX10 - even SLI'd Ultras. Admittedly this is as high resolution, but if you want to split hairs... ;)
