Hi Chaps
Just wondering what the shelf life of DX11 is likely to be.

Am I correct in thinking that any revision i.e DX11.1 would not be inplimented by the current DX11 cards.

Is DX12 etc on the horizon?

Thanks

We haven't heard any news about Dx 11.1 for ages meaning that even if it's in the development, it will most likely come out with next generation card releases (Fermi 2/Radeon 7000). Can't speak about Dx 11 yet.

It was roughly 2.5 years from Vista to 7, if we assume the same for 8 and that 8 will have DX12 AND it will take a year before DX12 is used in games then that's ~2.5 years from now.

Even if/when DX11.1 or DX12 come to light, DX11 will be around for some time. To be honest DX10 and even DX9 are very highly supported in the majority of titles. People are still using windows XP / DX9 and the software developers know this.

Vista was a bit of a dog though, got lots of bad press, many people didnt change from XP. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been, and is a rather decent operating system imho.

If Windows 8 comes out too soon, I think a lot of people will feel that microsoft are just money grabbing. Sure XP was probably around for too long, but Windows 7 is still shiney and new, and doesnt need replacing quite yet :)

If/when there is a DirectX 11.1/a/b/c etc currant cards won't be compatible for obvious reasons and by the time a new update of DX11 comes about a lot of us will be upgrading our hardware anyway so it’s not a big deal.

I tend to think DX11 will be around for quite while with a similar shelf life to that of DX9, it’s proven quite popular with developers and gamers alike with a handful of good games already using the new API. It will take a number of years to get the best from DX11 (it wasn’t really until Oblivion came along that showed us what DX9 was really capable of) so were all in for the long haul with this API so I would be surprised if DirectX 12 showed up any time soon.

A number of future AAA titles will not have XP support, one of which is Battlefield 3. Won't be long before XP support is dropped altogether.

Yeah I agree I think it will be ~3.5 years for 8

I wouldnt expect a new DX until the new wave of consoles launch in 201?......

Until then, with the odd exception, gfx are stuck in a dead end, DX9 class rut....

I forgot the most important thing. Windows 8 will most likely come out with a release (or whereabouts) of a new Xbox and DirectX 12. Consoles is where the major change will occur.

I tend to agree
Nobody will make any money pandering to a bunch of enthusiasts;)

Having said that, if your average joe public graphics card will barely run the latest games anything like maxed/good fps, maybe the devs are paying homage to the early adopters (Or using us as Lab Rats:D)

I don't see the point in creating DX12, there isn't much difference between each DX mode i've seen so far, just minor things.

DX9 onwards.

dx11 hasn't even been fully glorified yet - tessellation is still only used in small doses in games, so i would expect to see it utilised heavily in games before the shift to dx11.1 or even dx12

But that's the point
Back in the early days of gaming when hardware was limited, devs/bedroom programmers used to squeeze every available ounce of juice from the hardware.
I'm not really sure that's the case any more and as has been pointed out, pc gaming is very much driven by the latest gaming consoles with the exception of Crysis and a few similar games.
In my opinion, programmers are spoilt with todays hardware and as such, corners are cut & nothing is even remotely optimised for any given platform save for certain format specific exclusives that are designed solely to shift the hardware.
I am certain that if DX12 came out tomorrow, your average pc gamer would be oblivious, the enthusiasts would grumble and Microsoft, Nvidia & Radeon would grow richer.
Big business dosn't or cannot afford to have a conscience;)
