Had this problem a little while ago but it only happened once so i thought nothing of it, now since yesterday its happening constantly.

Whenever i seem to boot up WoW (yeah yeah) i get in game for all of 5 seconds before the whole pc crashes and displays

When booting back up i get more fancy lines etc until i finally get to desktop and i'm greeted with this as my desktop

However when i do a standard reboot without holding down the power button for about 10 seconds (because of it crashing) i can get back on my desktop just fine and have no problems even with aero etc, until i launch a game and the cycle begins all over again.

is it safe to assume this card is on its way out or is there any hope for it??

Thanks. DK

edit: managed to play a game of SC2 without any problems.

Hmm You played star craft 2 on it?

I find that Wow actually uses 99% of Each GPU on my 5970, SC2 only uses 60% each GPU.

Mabey WOW is taking your card to its limits and then it fails... People may think WOW is not a hard game to render but on ultimate and at 6080x1200 it sure is lol

you tried loading msi afterburner to see if your card is on stock voltage cos i bought a 2nd hand card once and it had been bios modded without the seller telling me.

MSI Afterburner won't show core voltage for some reason.

however i managed to run Kombustor, OCCT and Furmark for a while without the system crashing or messing up.

not really sure what to think about the situation now.

for wow you put the control panel setting to crossfire advanced i remember that for the 4870x2 to get the most out of it. besides that run driversweeper or similar then redo drivers and do a repair on wow too. And wow is more cpu limited than gpu. take 100mhz off your overclocked cpu i think it caused your crashes.

When my 4870X2 failed it looked very similar to that. From what I have seen on this and other forums is allot of 4870X2's are failing in a similar way.

Yeah i definatly think its dying now and not anything else

reformatted and reset my cpu overclock and still crashed, even on the desktop when copying files the little graphic on that was corrupting.

using an old 8800gtx if that has problems too then i'll know its not graphics related.

if it's outside warranty get some pic by pic guides on taking it apart and artic silver the 2 gpus taking care not to damage the piles and piles of thermal tape they used. You might just have an issue with air pockets or poor contact. It's a last shot but it extended my 4870x2 for a few months.

At least you didn't knock the already iffy surface mounted capacitor off completely like I did yesterday on my 4870X2 d'oh.

already done that a few months ago lol, card was getting annoying with the fan constantly spinning up and down so took it apart, cleaned it and put arctic silver on it managed cut about 35c off the temps.

hopefully its definatly a graphics problem and not something else, if this old card is alright just gonna make do till the 6000 series comes out and pick up a few upgrades along with it (cpu/mobo/memory).

If its not i'll be back on here for advice :p
