Dynamic resolution

This is a new saying to me but have noticed it mentioned more than a few times in the witcher 3 articles for the x1. Can anyone explain exactly what it means. My taking is that the game runs at 900p when its able to but drops to say 720p in the more demanding scenes in the game, would that be correct??? if thats correct then why was the ps3 slaughtered for this last gen yet its classed as some kinda neat trick on the x1 part
 
and sometimes its pretty bad (looking at you rage ) but when done good you don't even notice it.

Wipeout HD did it pretty well in all fairness.

worked ok, TBH its just a trick to say the game is 1080p but it can display up to 1080p but how long it displays this image, well who knows.

Its like dynamic v sync, soon as the buffer goes below refresh rate - tearing so really and truthfully I'd always prefer if possible fix resolution and a fixed v sync over this dynamic malarkey
 
Yeah definitely :D just think there is so much pressure to hit 1080 60fps :rolleyes: but I'd prefer 30 frames locked than frames that are all over the place , same with resolution I'd rather take a lower resolution than have horrid strobing fro switching every 2 mins
 
Thats the thing it could be in every game for all i care as long as its not obv or noticable ( cue black flash of screen on pc when changing res )

The difference would be that the full resolution would be output (so say it's set to 1920x1080), but the scaler inside the console is dynamically adjusting the internally rendered resolution up to the output resolution that your TV will be running at.

So it wouldn't ever be a case of seeing a black flash as the resolution changes.

Same here, I'd take 720p and solid 30fps/60fps over 1080p with framerate drops. Everyone's obsessions with 1080p is kind of tedious. I've played a lot of games on Xbox One now and I couldn't tell you which were 1080p and which were 720p, it doesn't make a single bit of difference when I'm sat 5-7 feet away from the TV.

The obsession with resolution is because the majority of people have 1080p LCD type TVs and non-native resolutions look bad.

I agree in principal that consistent FPS is more important than resolution, but I'm genuinely surprised when people can't tell the difference between a 1080p picture and a 720p one. Even going between 1080p and 900p games there is a noticeable lack of sharpness in the picture. How much that matters I guess is down to personal preference, but it is a consistent reminder that they've failed to release hardware that can regularly work at the resolution that has been the standard for TVs for several years.

It isn't tedious, it should be a basic expectation. There is no excuse for current gen consoles to be unable to produce a solid 30FPS at 1080p in my opinion. But console lovers don't like the fact their consoles just ain't up to the task.

Really, given the PC technology they are using I would expect them to run well in excess of 30 FPS at 1080p.

Whilst I like my PS4, I can't help feeling it should be performing better. It is 2015 and I don't feel like consoles have developed as far as they should have done given the technology available.

But I only tend to really notice when I come from PC to PS4 or when I actually stop and look at the differences. That is not to say they are not obvious, though, but simply when I am playing CoD or FC4 I am concentrating on the game and playing it rather than the graphics. I am disappointed that the FOV is so narrow too. I feel like I am playing in a tunnel a lot of the time. :(

But meh, I can cope with the lower fidelity and limited options because there are less cheaters. Although, having said that, there are a lot of clanner try hards out there these days Ximming it up. :rolleyes:
 
As I said above though, I honestly cannot tell if a game is running in 720p, 900p, or 1080p, and I'm on a 1080p TV. I guess I should just be pleased that this kind of stuff doesn't bother me, I worry about the game itself, rather than the resolution.

As long as it's smooth and the gameplay is good, that's all I care about.
 
I cannot tell either sat 4-5 feet away on a 50" Tv. As long as a game runs well and plays good I could not care what res it runs at.

It does seem the big thing with this round of consoles but was almost unheard of with the 360 & PS3.

Have you tried a game on both consoles on the same TV?

I tried it on my TV with Battlefield 4 on my PS4 (900p) and xbox one (720p) and I could clearly see the difference on the firing range map when switching between inputs.

I bought it as I got it cheap for the PS4 (alredy had it on XO) but was curious to see if I could tell the difference. That's the only game I have tried.
