I can't seem to find a free option and the Wikipedia page seems to suggest they no longer offer it. I guess legacy users can carry on using the free service though.

My free account stopped working a while back, they only do trials now.

You will need to sign up for a trial and which point you can keep one host if you cancel. I suggest No-IP also

I use no-ip

Have to login once a month(I think) to keep it active

I normally just use my WAN IP with a single computer, so never bothered with DynDNS. But now I'm adding to my home network, such as my still not yet finished HTPC, NAS, cameras etc, hostnames will be much simpler than IPs.

No-IP works fine for me. I don't think you need to login to keep it active, as long as it keeps receiving IP refreshes from your hosts it's fine.
