Dyson DC25 - Burning Smell

Evening All,

My Dyson DC25 produced a plastic burning smell this evening and the bristles switched themselves off repeatedly. Eventually, whilst the vacuum remained on, refusing to spin at all.

A quick look around the head (link below) and I could see the remnants of some smoke vapour coming out the mouth.

I expect the motor is burning out or coming to the end of its life as this area was particularly hot to the touch and there are no obstructions on the cyclinder that spins itself.

Suction on the upright tube which detaches with the handle to be used with accesories seems a little on the low side. I've removed and cleaned the filters and will see if that improves when dry.

Has anybody experienced similar with this model? It's a few months out of warranty and I will google and switch out the motor if simple and reasonable enough. Otherwise I'll look for a repair.

Thanks,

BennyC

(Inb4 shouldn't have bought a Dyson etc etc :p ;) )

Sounds like the brush roller is jammed and the belt is slipping on it.
Should be able to unscrew the round discs on the ends of the roller. You'll find there's a load of carpet fibre wrapped around the centre spindle slowing the rotation. Remove this and try it again.

Funnily enough the brushbar on my 8 year old DC24 decided to give up the goose last night. Took it apart and checked and cleared the brush but to no avail. So took the plunge and ordered a replacement DC41MkII; should be arriving in the next hour!

Same thing happened to me, motor had died. Dyson do a repair service for £79, or £99 if it is the motor, including all parts and labour. They come to your house, lay out a nice mat to keep everything clean and replace everything that looks rough. He replaced all the pipes, belts, motor, cyclone and a few other bits and bobs as well as cleaning the entire thing - basically a new machine. Worth it if it's not that far outside the warranty, the new parts and work is guaranteed for 12 months too.

Checked that the belt hasn't slipped and jammed?

Don't think the belt is slipping because the motor is actually refusing to spin.

Sorry thought I'd said the roller is completely clear.

That sounds pretty reasonable considering a replacement head alone is £79. I'll give them a ring :) it's taken some proper abuse over 5 years including hoovering up loads of grout dust and smashed tile adhesive from when the kitchen floor was relaid :o hardly the ideal application for it!

Our Dyson conked out last weekend. The first time my wife has picked up the hoover in years and she breaks the darn thing (somehow hoovering is a "man's job" in our house!).
It started to smell, we took it a part to clean it and now it won't turn on.

Any thoughts?

This Dyson repair seems like a good shout.

Thank you for your reply.

For the fault you're experiencing we would advise having a repair on the machine. I have located your account and can see that the machine is no longer under guarantee and as a result any replacement parts or repairs will now be chargeable.

We offer a fixed price repair for £79. VAT and Labour are included, as well as most parts with the exception of consumable items such as washable filters and belts. If the motor needs to be replaced, the repair will cost £99 including VAT. An engineer will complete a full electrical safety check and replace any broken parts. We won't replace any parts where the damage is cosmetic nor does this cover the removal of blockages usually.

In most cases an engineer can visit an address of your choice and it's easy to book a repair.

If you would like to be booked in please reply with a selection of weekdays over the next few weeks suitable for a repair.

Should you have any further queries please don’t hesitate to contact us again via email at [email protected]

Had this recently with our DC24. Chances are something has wrapped itself around the bearing and roller on the motor side (under the plastic cover) which is gumming it up and straining the motor, which is the burning plastic smell. I took mine apart and cleared everything out and it now works fine.

You can buy the motor assemblies for about £20-25 and they're straight forward to replace.

Had this carried out today, entire new head assembly (as they no longer just replace the motor unit), filters and a few other broken parts replaced plus a suction/integrity test in 30 minutes for £79 :) the assembly alone online costs that.

I'd actually taken the assembly apart and cleared out the back of the brushes and checked the belt wasn't slipping but the motor was at the end of its expected life.

I was also offered a discount on a DC40 but declined.

I have my late grandmother's DC24 which makes a burning smell too. I also fairly sure I have seen some electrical arcing around the motor area in the ball!

I need to investigate this repair service...

I had an issue with my DC24 brush bar not turning a few weeks ago. I went with the fix price repair at £79, turned out to fix the problem I need a new brush bar, cleaner head assembly and a few other plastic peices.

All together the parts alone where close to £100, cleaner head assembly alone is £82 to buy from Dyson direct. Once the guy had finished it felt like a new machine.....well worth the money and great service all round.
