Hey guys,

Anyone have the Dyson tower fans? Just reserved a couple at Argos for the bedrooms. My sons room gets very hot in the new house and having walked in his room tonight to check on him, he was dripping with sweat bless him with next to nothing on, and being May, little concerned for the Summer months.

Our room is on the third floor as well so naturally gets very warm anyway.

They need to be quiet and good at sending cool air across the room from a corner, which is apparently what they are very good at. But it would be good to hear first hand experience from the OcUK regulars :)

I know they are expensive but given how often we used fans last year, these will definitely get used enough to justify it over the next few years. Alternatively, open to recommendations for other models to look at?

Thanks

No they are a stupid price for what they are, and fix issues that have already been fixed by much cheaper designs. Far better to get a ceiling fan.

+1 another dissenter. -
look on hotuk - dyson was giving these away for 'free' with the v6/v8 vacuums - maybe the combined package is closer to value I attribute to products.
(they are made in far east too - so apart from UK R&D centre, not supporting UK despite ethos he like to portray)

I have tried the Dyson fans and to be frank for what you pay they aren't that great, I instead when I got a £90 Ceiling fan and that has made a huge difference. Has a great LED cool white light and the amount of air it moves is great!

Thanks guys, certainly not going to grumble at not spending that much money :p

Only reason I didn't look at conventional fans for my sons room was because being 2, he's the sort that would think it's a good idea to poke things into the blades, be it toys or fingers :p

Haven't considered ceiling fans, but definitely will take a look.

Thanks again!

One thing I will say is some ceiling fans can indeed hang down quite a lot and I won't say how many times I have stretched and put arms in the air and hmm yea you can guess it hurt quite some what, and at least at the age of 2 it should be quite some time before they can reach the fan if you did get a ceiling one :)

I got the Dyson tower fan for about £100 last year. It's okay, I would say it is definitely not worth the full price and I think it's still been an expensive purchase even for what I paid for it. It looks snazzy yes, but the airflow isn't that amazing, and it's still fairly noisy.

Don't get the point of them. Yes they look cool but they're pretty effective and not a great deal quieter than a normal fan. For 10x the cost.

Weve had a tower fan in my daughters room since she could walk ~2 years or so and shes never put her fingers in it. Also the gaps quite small anyway for fingers. As we have the same issue, do you keep the curtains closed in the room much during the day?

I've had standard tower fans in both the kids rooms from about that age in the summer months and the mesh is small enough that even tiny fingers can't get in. The main issue was stopping them from playing with the buttons, continually switching the damn things on and off.

I have a Dyson desk fan and have to say it's fantastic. Normal bladed fans keep me awake, this is the only one I can run at night.

You don't get the buffeting like you do from a bladed fan..But it still makes a noise. We have ours a couple of feet from the bottom of the bed and set on 3 out of 10 which moves the air around and doesn't disturb our sleep.

When we had a ceiling fan we found it cooled better with less buffeting if we ran it backwards so would suck air into the room rather than blowing air down onto us

Had a couple on an old office. Complete waste of time, yes near silent but it's because they move next to no air!

i've got the hot and cold one so i can use as a heater in winter and a fan in summer. makes sense to go for this option over the fan only option IMO.

it's not silent but it blows a hell of a lot of air. i think they are pretty loud tbh. a conventional fan is quieter but moves less air.

ceiling fan would be great. must be PITA to install though I imagine unless you confident at DIY. what i like about the dyson is i can pick it up and put it any room which you can't with a ceiling fan. it's also got a temperature control, timer. can blow straight or wrap around as well as stay in 1 direction or move side to side. it's also remote controlled. it's got a lot of fancy features you don't get with a cheap fan or heater.

however they are like £300-£400. they aren't worth it in the slightest. i got one in a sale plus i had £40+ vouchers to burn. plus i needed a decent heater. it looks timeless in design. if it lasts 30 years it will have been worth it.

we installed fantasia mayfair ceiling fans in the rooms instead. you can get low hanging versions now with or without lights. they were much more effective. They seem a bit expensive but we wanted quality ones that we could get spares for easily. and they have never gone wrong yet had them for 8 years now.
