I'm sorry for another "what camera" thread but I'd like a seeing to by the camera Gurus ;)

I have an Olympus E-10 at the moment which in its prime cost £1400. It's a decent camera for its age and takes good photos, but it's flawed in that it has poorish ISO (although better than some modern cameras) and it hasn't the ability to entirely swap the lens.

Basically for my 21st my rents wanted to shell for a holiday but I told them to keep some money and treat me to a new camera instead.

I'm after the best quality camera for about £500. £500 is what the parents would be willing to pay round abouts, I also have the oportunity to sell my E-10 to go towards an extra lens. I want a good lens for the kind of shots in the thread linked below and also one good for motorsport/moving shots with a decent focal length.

We could never afford the £1000 type lens kits so they're out of the question really. What I'm looking for is what the tradeoff will be with whatever lens for about £300 - £400 and a camera to suit.

My first thoughts on a camera are the 350D or the E500. Clumsy interfaces and heavy or uncomfortable bodys aren't really an issue. I'd rather have the image quality and a decent perfomance plus I'm used to my heavy E-10 anyway.

Any help or insight would be valued plus any example photos too, if anyone has had first hand experience. Cheers.

so what's your total budget then? How much are you expecting to get for your e10?

the 350D kit is probably your best bet, and saving for more lenses as you get the need :)

I think it's a bit unrealistic for anyone to spend under a grand on dSLR equipment, even if they set out to in the first place ;) it's a bug that destroys your wallet. even with my poor income, and setting out to spend £600 originally ive spent about 2k already :)

Well, for a more expensive camera I wouldn't appreciate the better features, not yet anyway. I want the ability to learn the pros and cons of different lens etc, so it's to be more of a learning step for 12 months or so. I want to develop the skills as something to fall back on if I need it, as well as to enjoy taking nice pics with.

My budget is £500 for the body with standard lens kit and then I'd say £400 for a zoom/motion lens.

Not a lot, but I'm getting my own place and my income is just over £800 a month  as jobs where I live are rarer than elephants in the area.

Hi Dup,

My current setup might be of interest to you:

- Canon 350d with 18-55mm kit lens bought new @ £550 [can now get cheaper]
- Canon 70-200mm F/4 L bought second hand @ £400
- Canon 50mm F/1.8 Mk II bought new @ £70

Rough calculations see this come in around the £1000 mark, but we could make some small changes:

- Get the Canon 350d with 18-55mm kit lens new
- Get the Canon 70-300mm F/4.5 - 5.6 IS new for around £350
- Load up any extra money you have on memory cards and bags etc

Therefore a sub £1000 spend even with memory cards and a bag.

I don't feel I have spent to much money so far on my setup, I have a good setup for what I've paid with lots of bags and memory cards to go with. I can vouch the 70-200 as being brilliant for Motorsport as well as general shooting, and in recent weeks we've seen some cracking photo's on here shot from the 70-300 Canon which is cheaper, optically not quite as good but has the feature of IS :)

Don't be scared to buy second hand especially for lenses when in excellent condition - you can save a lot. Although L glass loses less than others I still made a saving on a in warranty UK model by about £80-90. And they are built like tanks!

Also, if you buy a set of extension tubes you can have some really good fun with macro photography on either a 50mm F/1.8 or the 70-200 F/4...not sure if the 70-300 has a manual focus ring but if it does then all the better because I'm sure that'll be good for it to.

Hope some of what I put helps, I was in your position not 6 months ago.

Just as an alternative to the canon options you can get a olympus E500 twin lens kit plus memcard etc for 599 at the moment.

you have to remember that with any slr you're buying into the system, and really the only two systems in the running are nikon and canon i'm afraid.

Olympus E500 : Possibly the smallest viewfinder I have ever seen on an SLR camera, period. Yes, it's even smaller than the ones on D50/D70/350D etc. Looks more like a P&S viewfinder than an SLR one, and you can forget about manual focus.

Personally, I would be tempted by something like the D50 body (£350 delivered) plus the 18-200mm AF-S VR Nikkor (£500-ish) as a good starter kit for all around purposes.
