E-mail client for network use

Hi all

Scenario: 10 pc's & one server. Currently use outlook, save e-mail to pst on local machine. When someone goes to another machine, need to setup e-mail again and pst is on another machine. Long story.

Does anyone know of a small e-mail client that does the basics but can live on the network and run from a mapped drive?

You could move the PST file onto the server and then get Outlook to open it from a mapped drive.

Another solution would be to use either IMAP or Webmail.

I heard that Outlook pst's on a file server were a bit resource hungry and can slow the file server.

A nice small e-mail client would be an easier solution tbh.

I found a nice one called Scribe and it even imports Outlook data. Hope this does the trick.

Unless the file server is a 386 with 1mb of ram on an old 10mb BNC you'll be fine with 10 .pst files on a shared drive.

I've seen servers with 50 .pst files on a shared drive with no problems.

best bet is to stick the .pst file on the users h:\ drive

sticking them on a shared drive would allow any user to open up their mailbox

also it would be a lot better putting it on the server, as it will be backed up

The plan is to have it on the server in some form. Just id heard scare stories of psts bringing down servers.

No they are not running exchange. Just direct pop3 to an ISP. Why would I ask for another e-mail client when exchange only really works 'porperly' with outlook?

100% your best option is to run hmailserver on the server, and connect to it via outlook imap.

I run a small home network like this, and everyone can connect to their email from any PC on the network. Automated backups, automated av scans, online, etc, etc. Some guys are running few thousand accounts on it with no problems.

Its an AMAZING piece of software, and its 100% free. The support is increidble also, and the forums are lively. I'm not trying to sell it, I'm just a very happy user.

That's your choice. I think it was clear that my response to your question of "do they run exchange/sbs?" being "how about of course not!" was clear enough to say "no they dont". If you need it spelling out to you then fine. :rolleyes:

Thanks for the suggestion but im trying to keep this a minimal amount of support. Another server app will just cause more issues. Thanks again ill bear it in mind for any other similar cases.
