Hey. I want my own e-mail system so I can have [email protected]. I don't want something that just forwards it. How much does this usually cost? I've looked at a few domain providers but they seem to be just for websites.

Help!

Well, you need to buy a domain, and then you need a box that hosts that domain, even if it's just for email. So when I send an email to mydomain.com, it looks up the nameserver for mydomain.com (configured usually by the people you bought the domain from) and asks it for the ip of the mail server. My mail client then opens a connection to that mailserver and sends it the email. The server then stores the email until you read it. If the server is not on, I won't be able to send an email.

So if you want domain-based email, you need a host who will collect your email for you and host it for you to read, or you need to own a super-reliable box on a super-reliable connection to always be there to receive your email.

Ah...sounds expensive! :D What's a good e-mail host that supports POP3? I don't want anything like GMail or Hotmail etc.

its not expensive. you're talking ~£10p/m if you're after what i think you are.

Or £15/year for someone like 34sp. You just need your domain hosted somewhere that gives you POP3 accounts with the webspace.

id try tsohost, cheapest package which i signed onto for testing is somthing like £2.50 a month and seems to have decent features for the money.

only downside is that its limited to 10 email addresses so might not be suitable for you
