OK I now have a 7600GT and a spare box and mobo since upgrading. was thinking of adding the E1200 doing a slight overclock.

Can the E1200 overclock at all?

Does the E1200 need DDR2 memory? As I have an ASROCK DUAL VSTA board which can run AGP/PCIe and DDR or DDR2 memory.

Thing is I can get one with cooler for 40€ which is all I want to spend on this box.

Nah the lack of cache will cripple it. I would try to pick up a used E21*0 chip.

And a CPU will run with either DDR or DDR2 on that board.

grabbed an E1200 for my server and it clocks to ~3ghz on stock volts so yeh they are good clockers, lack of cache will hurt it quite a lot for gaming though.

go older

i got my e6300 off here
pushed to 3.1GHz easy under a thermaltke V1 cooler on lowest fan speed
runs at 25-35 under load

could get it further by turning the fan up but its good enough

i paid £25 for the chip

I would either pay the extra £15 for a E2180 or as suggested, pick up a used E21xx or E4xxx etc chip.

But only having 512Kb cache per core cant be that bad, havent most the AMD X2 chips only got that?

I was going to get an E1200 based rig to replace another family members single core a64 rig?

AMD chips don't need so much cache with their memory controller being on the CPU.

The E1200 is pretty much aimed at office machines.
