I'm going to build a budget system for a friend based on one of the budget C2d's, prbably the cheapest E2140 or E2160.
Can someone recommend M/B ( on board graphics ) and some Ram (1gb) please.
I'll be re-using drives etc, but will need a new power supply as the old one took out the motherboard when it went!
He doesn't game at all, just email, web etc, but a lot of it!

Cheers

If he isnt gaming or overclocking the one in my sig is top notch.
Its a really well made feature rich bored and does overclock marginally but this is just down to memory dividers and not build quality or component factor and is matx as well so its well contained and inconspicuous in the right case.
cant go wrong for a web machine and reasonably priced to.
As for memory ocuk's cheap stuff should do the job nicely again due to not needing to overclock the machine aswell just go for some ddr2 800 think its on here for about £35 a gig or some thing silly like that.
and a power supply i cant really comment on them as i don't know a great deal abou the models about but you dont need anything special.
i should imagine any 400/450 watt should do.
might even be worth looking into a cheapish case a antec or some thing as some of them come with psu's and your requirements arn't high.
all in all your build price should only amount to some thing like £180/£200 all in not bad really when ya think about it

Fast capable, very upgradable, and under 450 notes. Add choice of monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc...

just a bit bemused thats all i paid £500 to play games and cant see me buying anything "twice" even clocked at a measly 2ghz my machine plays stalker at full detail fine dirt speeds along in ultra settings smooth as hell.
£450 for an internet and email machine when he has other parts like optical and hard drives case by the sounds of it to and monitor seems a little excessive

Sounds good damian666, I did look at the gigabyte board, was thinking of an Asrock too.
I will be re-using his existing hard drive, optical drives and case.

Any other suggestions?

Don't bother with the E2160, the E2140 clocks just as hard (if not harder), but please get a decent motherboard, he'll only regret it in the long run otherwise :)

Me: E2140 @ 3.35GHz :)

Gigabyte GA_965P_DS3P (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard its a very good board

That and the 965P DS3 are both very good boards. Some of the new P35 chipsets can be had for the same price but I don't know what they are like as I've never used one.

EDIT:
In a lot of the spec me threads I've seen this board recommended a lot.

Get a P35 chipset board tbh, might as well have the latest available, plus they clock stupendously well!

Abit IP35 is my choice. I absolutely love my IP35-PRO, best motherboard I've bought in the last 3 years.

How about...

Hope your mate doesn't have more than 2 IDE/PATA drives?

Nice

I did a similar build for a mate, but took the Abit Fatal1ty mobo with onboard gfx as he doesnt game at all, and plonked for an E2160.

300x9 straight up, no voltage changes, bargain imo.
