which cpu should i buy quad or e2180?

k im considering going 4 the e2180 instead of a quad due to the huge price difference allowing me to buy better components like gfx and case..., i have never overclocked b4 and was wondering how easy it is to do and what results i will get from the e2180 in comparison to the power of the q6600, also what motherboards and cooling do u recommend to get a decent result. im on a bit of a budget btw lol. so do u guys think the performance of a e2180 overclocked will be anywhere near the quad and is it near enuff to make it worth getting and saving £100? thanks 4 your advice

I think if budget is the issue i would get the e2180 and see if you can get 3ghz or close like a lot of people on here have done. Whats the PC to be used for?? At the moment it would be hard to find a game that runs much better on a quad-core although this could change later. If you get the e2180 the worst that could happen is you spend £55 on it and decide to sell it in 6 months for about £40 and get a q6600 or whatever is about then

yeh i spose so, i will be using it for gaming mainly as well as some photo and 3d applications (maya) but yeh i guess the quads will come down in price by the time they r truly needed anyway

If your choice of cpu will compromise the rest of your system, especially your graphics acrd, then I would seriously think about the e21x0 series. For the price they are amazing, and one of them with an 8800 GT and crysis will fly for very little expenditure.

Overclocking to 3GHz is relatively easy on a modern p35 or 965 chipset.

yeh i was planning on the 8800gt either way but the cpu cost will affect my, case, psu, amount of ram (2 gig insted of 4) and some other stuff. but if the e2180 when overclocked is good enuff 4 all the latest games including crysis, ut3, bioshiock..... then a quad might not be worth the downgrade in other areas and i can always upgrade to quad when it is needed , by then they will probaly be dirt cheap anyway i guess.

I would get the e2180, one hell of a little chip, I got one to 3.8 (cooled by Titan Amanda). But you may want to hold off buying an 8800gt, the new rev 8800gts should be out in a week or so, these are said to be very fast.

yeh so i have heard but aren't they going to be more expensive, because i won't have anymore money than i currently do because i am a student :)

Ye, we can get a 195 euro 512MB version over here(In the Netherlands) already, great price for such a card!! I'd really get one!

Recommendation on the E2180 from me - I'm a noob overclocker and got 3.2ghz on my first try :) (Mind you I had to do a bit more twiddling to make it Orthos-stable at the speed, but it is now)

So - a lot of oomph for very little money, and the option to upgrade to quad core when those prices come down. However - the cost of a Q6600 v E2180 is about £110... maybe you've got that if you save up a little more? And you could then choose between the 8800GT and the new ATI 38xx cards too?
