Just recieved an E2180 from OCUK and it's come in a Pentium dual core box! It even has the name Pentium E2180 on the heat spreader! Is this a conroe C2D based chip or Pentium D?? I'm worried i've been sent the wrong thing.

I think its so people think that they are budget chips. Your average Joe will look at the chip labeled as a Pentium and look at the chip labeled as a Conroe and buy the more expensive one because it has the Conroe name on it.

In reality there is little difference, its their way of marketing their products to make as much cash as possible.

I'd have thought it would be more likely that Joe Public would buy the Pentium branded chip over the other name, it must be a far more recognised chip name? Core2? Nah never heard of it... Pentium Dual Core? Hmm, and a good price!? *purchases*

But core2 has been being touted as new, fresh and better.

Naming it pentium is indeed stupid, I also thought it was netburst originally. Makes you think "I'm going to buy amd if all Intel have at that price range is netburst". Losing Intel loads of money. Also why call it pentium hoping people will think it's crap and buy the c2d, when you could just not have brought out the cheaper less profitable cpus in the first place and saved loads of money? Logic seems to fail these companies...

I guess I can see why Intel wanted to reuse the Pentium name, since it's still much more recognisable than Core2... enthusiasts might see 'Pentium' and think that it's old technology, but the name's gonna ring a bell with Joe Public. If you're buying a Q6600 you're gonna know what Core2 is and why it's better than Netburst, but your average buyer of a PC with an E2180 is gonna be more familiar with the Pentium name.

To be honest, Intel'd be blinkin' mad to market 1.6-2ghz netburst cpus for £50... That'd be a waste of money for both them and whoever buys them!
