Hi all, I need some help!!

This morning I recieved an E5200 CPU to go into a new motherboard (that was installed by a repair shop), however when I installed it - the pc did not work. Surprise suprise I went online to find that the GA-965P-DS3 (Rev1) does not support this processor.

Im currently selling this processor (at half its price... meh, life's a &*#$!), but I need to find a cheap CPU that will work.

I found the E2200 on OcUK (same where I bought the e5200 from) - my question is, will the E2200 WORK 100% in the Rev1 of GA-965P-DS3.

Im quite desparate as I have been without this computer for a while now and I have Uni-related things to do.

Many thanks in advance,

Matt.

As far as I know you need to have a compatible CPU with the current BIOS to be able to flash the BIOS to the newer version to support the new CPU.

Im a bit confused, when I had my last motherboard/CPU bundle, the E8400 worked in the X38-DS4 perfectly (but the M-board was F1 bios and E8400 was F2??????)

So going on that premise, will the E2200 still work in the GA-965P-DS3 but I will need to flash the bios to most recent to "get the most" out of it?

So what happens if person X buys a CPU that is compatible with a motherboard AFTER a certain bios - do they have to buy another CPU that was compatible with the older bios to flash the new one?!?!?!?1 seems a bit odd?

Any help plzz :(

Yes unfortunately, unless of course you can borrow one.

50/50 chance. Either the machine will boot up with the CPU at the wrong frequency or show an error during the POST, or refuse to boot. If it's the former you can flash the newer BIOS, if the latter then you'll need an older CPU to do the flash.

I've checked Gigabytes website and the Rev1 of GA-965P-DS3 supports the E2200 after Bios F12.

F12 was created exactly 2 years ago, so would a new motherboard have at least this BIOS version?

Thanks

It's not that F12 is a common (and newer) bios type it's that it's the 12th revision specifically for the P965 DS3.

The X38 you mentioned worked using the newest F1 bios revision because the motherboard chipset is a lot newer than the P965.

You'll most likely need an older CPU (e6600 or even a s775 Pentium 4/old celeron model) in order to flash the bios in the first place.

I had to do a similar thing when installing my Phenom II in the Asus mobo in my sig.

Yea but what Im saying is, the motherboard was bought new a few days ago (so could this new board was probably "made" later than May 2007 - which was when F12 was the BIOS... so they'd ship it with the latest BIOS surely?)

Do they ship motherboards with their latest respective BIOS or do they always supply motherboards throughout 'time'with the orginal BIOS?

They'll normally supply them with a newish bios but it's rarely the newest in my experience. I think my DS3 was shipped with the F5 bios when i first got it - at that time i think the current bios was F10.

The biggest problem is the age of the board - you won't guarantee any new compatibility unless you bought a newer chipset. Personally i would have only considered P35 and up since they should work with e2*** and e4*** series chips right out of the box.

You have a couple of options. Either keep the P965 and get an e6300, e6400, e6600 or get a P35 (or better) and get the e2200.
