E2200 and setup on ASROCK DUAL VSTA

Hi,

Just installed my new E2200 in an Asrock DUAL VSTA mobo. All seems to be running fine but I have few queries before I do the main OS install:

1. It id'd the processor in the BIOS as an E2200 2.2GHz. However the BIOS shows the CPU to be running at c2.9GHz? I know the default FSB on the mobo is 1044 but I thought the E2200 was meant to run at 800?

2. CPU temp at idle is around 31-33 in the BIOS with an Arctic Freezer. My concern is that it's actually running OC'd as the mobo was bought 2nd hand and may have some old settings although I think the guy reset the CMOS.

I can't find anywhere in the BIOS to set the FSB and I'm wary of putting it under load until I'm sure it's setup right.

I'd appreciate some advice and apologise in advance if I'm missing the obvious!

Cheers

Andy

1. It'll be set to 1066 (266FSB) in the BIOS, I have the same board and it did that with my e2160. Don't drop it to stock (go higher :p)
2.Temps are fine, actually they're good.
3. FSB adjustments are under CPU settings -

See here:

CPU Frequency is your FSB, but like I say, don't go back to stock as these CPU's can handle 2.9Ghz.

Thanks for the info. I'll try putting XP on it tonight to check the temps etc before I install Ubuntu.

What other settings have you applied with this mobo that I might consider?

If it ever fries my CPU I'll come a looking for ya as I'm only in Newcastle!;)

Not scared...just about to have second child so can't afford to replace anything! Wife would kill me!

Have 2GB of the Geil 667 stuff and an XFS Geforce 6600GT running 2 Iiyama 17" TFTs and will be putting in a ELSA Synergy II PCI card to run a third Iiyama. I'll probably pick up a passive cooled dual DVI PCIe card soonish as the 6600 is a bit noisy.

This will hopefully be enough of a boost over my old AMD3200+ to keep me happy for a year until I can push for a whole new system. I'm happy to OC a bit to get the extra boost. I was just under the impression the Asrock VSTA wasn't a good overclocker?

Also assume temps will drop a bit as the Arctic Cooler beds in?

Cheers

It's not a good overclocker unless you have a 800fsb (200fsb quad pumped) CPU with a higher multiplier, like yours (x11). You should be able to hit around 300FSB giving you ~3.3Ghz. (300x11 = 3300)

But, if you're not confident, have a read of the thread for this board in this section. Is your gfx card AGP or PCI-e?

As for temps, 1-2 degrees maybe.

Card is AGP. Had it for a while. I don't do gaming so an upgrade hasn't been a high priority. Hopefully I can pick up a dual NVIDIA passive quite cheap or even 2nd hand to quieten it down.

I'll take a look at the mobo thread. Could have sworn I'd done a search a not found much. Must have mistyped or something.

My god, that's a long thread!

Can you point me at any major settings I need to be aware of or if I can get an Ubuntu live CD to run fine with the current settings and the temps are OK should I just leave well alone?

Cheers

yeah man I gotta say the motherboard doesn't clock high enough to damage anything. Put the FSB right on up to 290 or so and leave the ram options at "auto" for now. When you find your FSB wall, mess around with the ram speed to see what divider it'll run on that'll run it closest to it's rated speed then tighten the timings. I have the Corsair XMS 2 on that board and I'm running it at a little lower that it's rated speed (because this board isn't that great at controlling the ram speed) but running at 3-3-3-9-1T.

overall it's a great piece of kit.

Sorry mate - I was mistaken, I'm running at 3-3-3-12-1T right now at 305Mhz (610Mhz DDR)...Don't think i've lowered the tras yet...I might try now...

EDIT - Just tried 3-3-3-9 and the computer didn't like it too much, gave me 3 beeps and had to reset it and change back to 12...the problem is this motherboard (from what I can tell) doesn't have a setting to run a 300FSB (305 in my case, but who's picky) and 667Mhz DDR2...My next purchase when I get my 3870 back from RMA is going to be a better clocking motherboard...

Well. Finally got it all up and running. Went back to defaults to get Linux installed. Thought I had an issue but it was probably just the monitor playing up.

Anyway, all up and running and have installed lm_sensors to keep track of temps. When running at 2.2 I get c. 21 and 27 when idle. I've pushed it FSB up to 266 as suggested and running cpuburn I get temps of 37 and 41 with both cores at 100%.

Now I'm not sure how accurate lm_sensors is. My console readout is:

Code:

coretemp-isa-0001

Core 1: +39°C (high = +85°C)

And it looks like the coretemp ones are the temps being read. Not sure on what temp1 and temp2 above are?

Any comments please?

Also does anyone know if coretemp windows app will provide accurate info if run from within an XP virtual machine?

Don't have access to the PC at the moment but it's a ZALMAN 400W (maybe 450?) I've had for a few years. I'd assumed it would be OK as I've not running anything more than in my old PC, in fact I've removed a HDD and 2 PCI cards.

I can push to a new PSU if need be as I'll probably need it when I get a better GPU and Quad Core.

If the 11.19 isn't too much of a worry I'd rather hold on though as my wife still hasn't forgiven me for buying the kit I have!

Any suggestions on a PSU?

What are the likely indicators of a problem here? I've had X crash on me once and firefox occasionally bombs out but I'd assumed these were just Linux issues as I've had similar probs on the old system, although that would occasionally freeze.

Cheers
