The way I read it, is that the new interface is mandatory like you say, but when you press the guide button, (Like you do now and you see friends and messages) you will see the whole of the old dashboard interface (maybe reduced in size slightly). So you can pull up the "Old" interface at any time.
What isn't clear is if functions like the System Blade have been added to the new interface. If they have then it will probably be quicker to use the new interface.
Don't like the idea of the forced new interface to be honest (Dunno why It can't be chosen by the user like HOME lets you pick between that and XMB as default).
The interface still looks slow in comparison to XMB, but you can see they have finally conceded that the functional (yet teletubby looking) old dashboard was a bit rubbish for a company that designs operating systems and interfaces for a living.
Ultimately as long as my old theme works I don't care too much (only ever bought 1 theme/gamerpic set so far so will be annoyed if it does not work).

My 360 is on its way for another repair. Oh, are you saying I'm a fanboy because I don't want to play dress up with virtual characters? lol.

I do have one, just not one that works.
I for one was astoundingly bored by the microsoft conference this year, there was just oo many "rip offs" of original ideas. They nailed the Teen-Mature market and are attempting to go after the casuals, I just cant see a new tacked on interface as being the thing that will grab that market.
To me they should have purely concentrating on increaqsing their stranglehold on the more mature market by showing some exclusives that would do that for them. PS3 is really XBox 360's competition in what they offer, the Wii is in a market of its own now.
I mean sure gears is exclusive but they showed Fallout 3....not exclusive, i for one will get this for my PC over my 360. Res Evil again not exclusive, since I dont have a PS3 i will get it on my 360. I think they just suffer in these conferences as it isnt Microsoft taking stage, its other developers etc so the enthusiasm for the product doesnt always come through if their developing for other consoles also.
Nintendo's should be a good one at 5pm tonight with the fantastic Reggie taking center stage and probably having a few digs at MS i believe and hopefully some nice demo's of the new motion tech and some big announcements! Pikman and Icarus are stapled on for me with the potential of some surprises.....hopefully a Zelda announcement of sorts and even the possibility of Luigi's Mansion 2. One hopeful Wii owner here!
Sony's however I fear for being the same as the last couple of years showing more of GT and Killzone.....hopefully looking to see a bit more of Home but there aint much in the Sony camp to tempt me to get a PS3....infact I have borrowed a mates purely to play MGS4!

I'm still not sold on this whole 360Mii thingamybob. I could accept the new interface if I was not staring at some daft avatar.

Does anyone know with this 8 person-chat if it will carry over to the game as "private" rather than entering the game lobby. With MS putting "8 player chat at dashboard" its making me think in the game you will just join the lobby chat rather than keeping your private party chat. I was hoping for atleast 4 player private chat. If anyone has any more information please reply

I don't like it at all, too many styles all mashed together, at least the blades tie in with the gamercard well and everything looks like it was designed by the same team and not some randoms who were probably Mii rejects.
I dont know why everyone is getting so hung up about it TBH...

Exactly, another non issue people are complaining about. If you're not going to use it, it's not going to affect you.

I've been waiting for ages to an alternative dash, but the one they have announced does'nt look brilliant.
Again a brilliant idea for the hard drive playing games, and whilst I realise they need to stop piracy the whole point for me would be to save me swapping disks

Considering it's also mentioned ingame in Halo 3, I REALLY doubt that. Why isn't it a good thing either? Love the 360/Hate PS3 too much?
WHat is mentioned in Halo 3? That bungie will be working with Sony??
I dunno if it's a good thing cos i didn't like the Halo's so don't know if it is anything to get excited about.
