E4300 a bit hot? Unstable?

I've had my E4300 for a while now and although it has been a fantastic chip it's always been a bit toasty, especially more so now I am folding when i'm not using it.

It's currently running at 3GHz (335x9) with a vCore of 1.36 on idle which drops to 1.34-1.32 on load. The motherboard is a Gigabyte p35-ds3l

Now it never crashes games wise, I can run CSS, COD4 or Company of Heroes all night and it doesnt bat an eyelid however if I head off to work and leave it crunching at home, I tend to come home and find it has crashed or blue screened.

Been giving it a run down at work today and noticed that when running orthos the max temp can be 66C and when running folding@home its generaly stays around the 55C mark. Is this considered acceptable or is it getting a bit too hot? I've seen people getting 40C load with the E2*** series of chips and wonder how they are managing to get those temps :(

I don't think i've over used the AS5, I have done a fresh install thinking too much or too little was used, made no difference. The HSF is a Scythe Ninja with a 120mm and the case is a CM690 with all 7 fans running.

Suggestions?

55c for folding is grand. Even 66c for folding would be grand too as long as it didn't get much warmer during summer.

But 66c under orthos at only 3ghz and ~1.33v seems very high. The stock cooler would be expected to do better than that, nevermind a Ninja and 7 (!) case fans.

thats what I thought!

I've just updated to the latest BIOS and installed the chipset drivers, although they won't do anything to the temps they still needed updating.

Is it possible to use too little AS5? I put a small line across the CPU and then used a plastic card to spread it until it was nearly transparent. How long would the AS5 take to settle in, that is if it needs to?

Mine does that on the stock cooler at stock freqs, I've got a seriously hot chip by the looks of things.

It can take a few power cycles to bed in, but it will only drop a couple of degrees.

Providing the CPU and heatsink are making contact, then there isn't really such a thing as too little paste (I use about a line the size of a grain of rice and still manage to end up wiping half of it off). If they weren't making full contact then one core would probably be far higher than the other. Was the paste evenly transfered to the bottom of the heatsink when you removed it?

Would it be worth swapping the Scythe Infinity/Mugen (thought I had the Ninja but checked and I don't ) for the Ultra-120 Extreme?

Is the Infinity/Mugen still a decent cooler?

I will rebuild tonight and see what happens :)

Thanks for the help so far
