recently i was kindly specced a pc on these forums and with my limited budget i was recommended an e2160/e2180 processor. however i might be able to get an e4300 slightly cheaper and i was just wondering if anyone could tell me which is more likely to be the better performer modestly overclocked on the stock cooler?

to be honest there isnt much difference ... but id say the e4300 was better because it has a 2mb l2 cache while the e2160/80 only has 1mb. but both processors are overclockable and work in much the same way.

i have however a e4400 and im happy with it. at the moment its stock but it wont sweat at 3ghz with stock fan/hs

If by some chance you can get the E4300 cheaper than an E2160 or around the same price then you might as well go for it but otherwise the difference is minimal enough in most situations.
