weird situation here. have an asus p5b deluxe that was running a pd805 until i could get another C2D. just bought an E4300 off MM and expected on a bios reset (just to be safe) that it would run @ 1.8GHZ - 200x9 iirc.

what happens instead, is that on bootup when the hardware info comes up - the info says that it's running @ 2.4 Ghz (266 x9) . i have left everything on stock. the bios detects it as an e4300 1.8Ghz - 2.4Ghz.

i checked my settings since i specified a few things with the PD inc FSB and thought something didnt reset. no such thing. everything is on default/auto.

went into windows (vista) and that picks it up as 2.4GHZ. the experience index thing gives me 5.3 for the CPU - just like my stock E6600 on my intel bad axe mobo.

then i grabbed cpu-z - that shows a new picture. The multi, when idle, drops to 6 and that runs @ 1.6Ghz then. leave cpu-z running and start encoding some video - bump up to the multi. i forgot to turn that thing off in the bios. i was pleased to start with since it's a free bump to an E6600 practically (minus the cache) but just in case i ran a few stress tests inc memtest just in case something funky was going on but no probs at all. has been encoding my holiday videos for about 12 hours now.

anyone had anything like this happen before? :o

The motherboard has defaulted to a bus speed of 266MHz after the bios reset. The CPU is in effect now overclocked.

plan to. this is to replace my 2nd pc. i want to get everything running on it first, then take a backup with acronis before overclocking :)

What is that thing in the BIOS that reduces the multiplier on C2D chips when they're not loaded? I thought I'd turned it off but I still get this.

Same thing happened to me - speedstep was off, but it was still dropping to a 6x mult when idle. Found out it is also the C1E setting that has to be disabled.

Same thing happened to me. Bought a P5B-E and 4300, booted up and the mobo ran at 266 FSB. This was due to the bios not recognising the CPU (the 4300 being the newest C2D). After bios flash it now defaults to 200 FSB.

but shouldnt it then say unknown cpu? it identifies it as an E4300

ah well. just makes me curious that's all. running @ 3Ghz now anyway and testing at the mo. am trying to find the max vcore i can throw into this thing before my corsair nautilus gets overloaded - using coretemp for heat info. Have heard that coretemp and intels TAT are the only good ones for this at the mo?

one step closer to a 100% OC.

@ 3.3 at the mo, not far to go now :)

Big.Wayne - what bios do you have on that mobo of yours?

ggrrrrrrr. cant get this going at 3.6. tried 400x9, 399x9 etc

can get to windows and run orthos blend for about 30 seconds before it freezes

trying to drop 1fsb at a time now to see how it goes. on 394 (3545mhz) at the mo and it's been going for a minute before stopping with errors - at least it didnt freeze.

settings in bios at the mo :

trying @ 1.5v now.if that gives errors i'll get the ram voltage to 2.1

any suggestions to get a little more?
