I just got my DS3 and 2GB PC6400 Patriot ram. I have being eyeing up the E4300 for ages now cause its very easy to overclock with cheaper ram. However, since the ram is clocked at 800mhz, can i run it not in a 1:1 ratio but still keep the system stable and fast? I would need to get it up to 3.6GHz to get a 1:1 and i find that pretty unachievable with a stock cooler. I think 3GHz will be my max on stock cooler until i get something better.

The E4300 is very cheap at the minute, and i dont think the E4400 will help my case at all. Note that i am on a tight budget and the E4300 fits it pretty well. The E6300 is not available on OcUK either and the rest are out of my budget.

Any comments are appreciated

Cabachon... remove the mention of a competitor on OCuk's forums or they will ban you.

The E4300 is wonderful, you should get 2.7 *at least* on stock voltage and cooling.

Your memory will be able to run 1:1 all the way up from 200 to 400, you get to choose. You can even run the memory faster, if you want more bandwidth. Though I am always wary of running async.

The E4400 has an even higher multiplier (10), than the 9 of the E4300, so can potentially overclock higher than the 4300 if your RAM was limiting, which yours will not be... depending on your mobo.

The E4300 is extremely tempting. Very nice clock you got there on the S3. MY DS3 should hopefully get the near to or the same on stock. I have found one for ~£84 including postage to Northern Ireland.

Sorry for the double post, but the E6320 is about £22 dearer than the E4300. Is it a better buy cause of the higher cache? And will it be a bit more future proof than the E4300? It will get me to 2.8GHz whilst keeping a 1:1 ratio. Or should i just go with the E4300 and achieve a higher clock without pushing my ram too much?

Since you have a nice mobo I'd save up for the E6320 since it clocks better IMO.

In general E4300s don't clock nearly as good as their E6**0 counterparts, have a look at this thread:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17680797

The most common clocks are 3 - 3.2Ghz I think, with some require very high voltage to achieve that - mine is sitting at 3.1Ghz 1.53V.

Yes the higher multi means you don't need high FSB mobo and expensive RAM but you must also know that 400FSB is very difficult for most E4300s.

You can also consider using Nvidia 650 or 680 chipset based mobos where you can set RAM speed unlinked with FSB.

*EDIT* @ OP: just saw your posts in that thread didn't realise you already got the E4300.

Sorry forgot to post back here. The E4300 is performing very well with the DS3 and 2GB PC6400 ram. The ram and fsb are not in sync so that i can run the ram at stock. Its at 2.7GHz at the minute, but i could go a lot higher but im only on stock cooling.

The only main reason i got the E4300 over the E6320 is cause the place i got it from had it at a very low price compared to the E6320. About £50 difference, may not seem much but i was on a tight budget. Would highly recommend the E4300 for some who is on a budget and wants to OC.

I have a 4300 with 2gb of Geil Ultra pc2 6400 C4 in a DS3P and all you need to do is to increase the memory multiplier to make the ram run faster than the fsb. I have done this with mine with no problems.

Yea i have the multiplier set to 2.66x (i think) so the ram is running at stock speed and the fsb stays the same.
