E4400 with PC3200 ?

You need DDR2 though. You can't use DDR PC3200 unless you have one of the Asrock bodge it altogether motherboards. Don't bother buying PC2-3200 either as when it comes to selling it you will be stuck with the stuff. Better to get some PC2-4200 or 5300, especially if you will be clocking it.

I have one of the "asrock bodge it all together " motherboards (excellent description)

It has worked well, but I am considering upgrading.

at the moment i have a an E6400 (I will be keeping this)
and 2 gig of DDr 400 memmory

I am thinking , with the price of DDR2 now at an all time low, to get some then upgrade the motherbaord soon.

is DDR 4200 enough, or should i be looking higher, also does any body know how fast memmory the asrock dual -vsta will take (im at work at the moment so cant look in the manual)

idealy I want some memmory that i can use with my set up now, replacing the DDr 400 for a couple of months before lookng for a new motherboard after the summer holidays

just done a bit of research, the ASROCK VSTA 775 DUAL will support pc5300 as long as you do a bit of bios jiggery pokery.

I thought 4200 was the highest it supports, so that is something.

with regards to memmory
are low timings eg 3 - 3 - 3- 12 better or are higher timings better eg 5 -5 5- 15 or a mid 4 - 4-4 12

or is it all the same just differnt ways of acomplishing the same processes

lower timings are always better...but the poster above is correct that they don't make as much of a difference on the C2D chips as they do with AMD.

But still, go for the lower timings.
