E4500? Worth It?

Im looking at building as cheap a rig as I possibly can without having to OC too far (I dont trust myself). Now obviously I could go with an AMD 5600 or 6000, but ideally I would like a P35 mobo to be ready for Penryn.

I would like to get the C2D 6550, but that is really stretching my budget, and I have to draw the line somewhere! The E6320 or 6420 dont seem worth it, as they have lower clock speeds than the E4500, and this seems more important than the L2 cache (correct me if Im wrong!).

So for somebody that doesnt want to overclock for now, but may want to tinker in a year or two when the warranty is up and it is getting slightly out of date, is the E4500 worth getting?

The 4500 is not worth the money IMO.

Either get a 2160 for 50 and overclock it.

Or save an extra 70 and go quad

you could get a 2160 to 2.2ghz just by changing the FSB value in the bios and keep the stock vcore.

the cache size doesnt have that much of effect on performance when going from 4mb to 2mb. youll only notice the different if you encode videos etc as that uses the extra cache

Hmm, yea I have heard that, which is why the 4500 seems tempting to me. I have heard that the difference between 1mb and 2mb is more noticeable during gaming, which is why i was shying away from the 21xx series though.

Having tried nearly all the C2D's in the range.

You won't notice the difference in real terms at the same clock speeds.
