Had a guy come in yesterday with his BMW complaining of a knocking at the rear when he accelerated in first and second and also what sounded like a wheel bearing whining under acceleration only.
Put it on the ramp and after a few minutes I saw that the nearside rear subframe mounting was torn completely out of the body! When you applied power the rear diff was making the entire structure twist putting strain on everything causing the whining.
Now there was absolutely no other signs of damage or how it could have been caused, the wheels were fine, all other suspension components were undamaged, and it wasn't caused by corrosion either as the whole car was very fresh for its year.
Anyone else ever came across anything similar or have any idea's what may have caused it, cos i'm stumped.

It's a very common problem, happened to my 328ci:

BMW fixed it for free, even though I was about the 5th owner and the car had done over 100,000 miles. Speak to them, they may help. There are loads of threads on e46fanatics and bmwland about the problem. It seems to mainly have affected early e46 6 cylinder cars like the 323 or 328.
