E46 drivers - water drip when boot open?

Hey guys,

I've owned 2 E46's, and my mate has owned 3, and out of them all, if it has been raining, and you open the boot lid, water drips from the boot lid, near where the lights are, onto the inside edges of the boot. To me this is a bit of a flaw!?

Is this something 'normal', or does it mean a seal around the lights needs replacing etc?

Cheers :)

Saloon, touring or coupe?

Both saloons I've owned (neither were BMWs let alone E46s) did the same thing, so might just be "nature of the beast"

As IainD may testify, the other favourite car on this forum, the mk3 Mondeo, drips from the side of the boot lid into the boot after it's been raining. It's rather annoying, but just the 'nature of the beast'.

On the Toledo it splashed onto the lip of the boot but on the 156 it dripped off the corners of the bootlid straight into the boot. I suppose it's harder to control on saloons because of the shape of the lid but not impossible

my vectra does it

It's supposed to drip into the rain channels on the side and at the back, but it has a habit of slashing when it hits them and splattering inside the car.

Come to think of it, yes it does :)

On most cars the bootlid is smaller than the opening, especially the narrow parts that the water runs down to.

One thing that would be worth considering is a rubber boot liner to stop it marking the carpet or building up in the spare wheel well

God yes this annoys me everytime it rains and I need access to the boot, it goes everywhere, stupid cheap design!

i think our E39 used to do this.

our C class sports coupes certainly did. worst design feature ever. open the boot and you get a waterfall on your head

Are you sure, because mine doesn't and neither does my Dads. It all drains into a channel which then drains away.
no, which is why i said i think. :p
it was minimal drippage though
