Just wanting to gauge some opinions from people who may have more knowledge of the market than me. What are these like at the moment? Do you see them dropping to sub 20k this time next year?
Id like one but (obviously) wouldnt want it to haemmorage cash like a standard E46.

there have already been some sub-20k cars with high mileage.

values appear to be holding up better than most similar cars though.

just dont pay over the odds for a 'mint' car expecting to the money back easily come resale.

BMW E46 M3, late 2004, finished in Carbon Black with Black leather electric, heated, memory seats. She has every possible extra, inc. 19" M3 alloys with 2 new front tyres recently.DVD Sat Nav - TV - 6 stack CD and single CD behind TV - Full Bluetooth Phone function, Harmon Kardon Speaker system. Auto Xenon headlights, rain sensor wipers. Body huging seats with lumber support, inflatable bulsters, memory and they are heated. The car has only done 30,000 miles and has service history. It also has fold away mirrors and parking sensors fitted. Full air con and climate control. Traction control, sport mode and 6 speed semi auto/ paddle gear box. All controls on steering wheel inc CD track, volume, phone control and cruise control settings.

The CSL will hold its price better than the M3 simply due to its more specialised build and limited numbers but like any trackday special you need to buy with care. They have shown themselves to be strong and pretty much reliable across the piece and bar a few bits that need tweaks are epic. There are, usually tired cars out there for around 20K or less now but I think a nice car, with a good history and the right bits for around 25K is a safe bet. If you can't afford to loose £5K on a car like this you shouldn't buy one in my opinion.

Well I use MTorque.co.uk but that is more aimed at M series cars, but I am sure there are people there who can help.

Comparitive running costs really. Will be doing 15/20k a year. A couple of people i have spoken to have said that a remapped 330D is a very driveable and enjoyable beast.

Are there any major ups or downs between the 2 engines. Obviously the 330d will be smelly and sound like a Ice cream van :D but are there any other things i should be aware of?

I ran mine from 97,000 to just shy of 140,000 with no issues. It was remapped to 210bhp/475Nm at 112,000 miles. I really enjoyed mine. I averaged 37mpg with mixed driving over the time I owned it.

Turbos are generally strong on them, injectors occasionally fail (although I never had any problems - maybe they were replaced just before I bought the car?).

Swirl flaps on the manifold can be an issue on 184bhp/204bhp autos, and 204bhp manuals (the 184bhp manual is safe from this). They can however be DIY removed I believe.

It was smelly from behind, but did actually sound pretty good.
