I'm willing to sell my e8400 to save some money and get e5200 instead. That would be my cpu till I get some more money for i7.
What do you guys think about this swap? Is it worth to change it? OCed e5200 should be fine right? Lets say oc it to 3.5ghz should enough, similar to stock e8400? Or wouldn't be?

Would I notice difference in games at 1920x1200 with GTX280?

Only difference is that the E8400 has 6mb of Cache and the E5200 has only 2mb.

This is supposed to make a difference to games. But the E5200 will overclock just fine.

Personally I wouldn't bother the downgrade, I doubt you'll save much unless you buy a cheap used e5200. I would stick the e8400 out for a lot longer maybe even a year or more until the i7's are maturer and cheaper.

Plus, you may end up breaking something when upgrading (random accidents can happen) you need to fit in the CPU, spend a few hours with overclocking it, pack up the other one, find a buyer, send it off blah blah blah.

Not worth it in the end.

Give it a year and faster I7's will be commonplace for £120 and they'll be having trouble shifting £70 E8600's in the bargain section, it's always been the way, no point in upgrading this early on if cash is an issue.
I waited for the AMD 4000 to get down from £250 to £90 a couple of years ago before I bought, last I saw of them was being sold off for £29 a couple of months back.
Just save a tenner a month for a year and by the end of it you'll be able to have the I7 of your dreams mark my words.

But then Westmere will be out and we'll all want that!
