Installed a new GTX280 and feel a bit CPU limited.
Now seeing as I am on a budget, would acquiring a E5200 an Ocing it to an inch of its life give me any noticeable improvement over my E6300 @ 3.15ghz?

I've searched around am not really sure if I should bother
Like If I got 4ghz out of the E5200 would I see gains? How much better is the chip purely cos of 45nm process?

Cheers

I have an e6300 at the moment at 3.2ghz, considering an upgrade to an e8400, 4ghz out of a e5200 is a bit of a push to be honest, but the difference between 3.15ghz and 3.7-3.8ghz would be noticable in my opinion, but it all depends what you play, if it's cpu based like cs source, then yes you'll see more of an improvement :)

Mine has topped out at 3.4Ghz, but it does perform better than my E6550 @ 3Ghz did, regardless of having half the cache.

E5200 is 2mb L2 isn't it?
I was just a bit dismayed that my 3dmarks were only2.5k more than my last card (8800gts640mb)
Really tho I am playing crysis again maxed out and its fine, GTA4 will probs never be smooth short of I7 so i'll just stick to what i've got...

That's a good option.

Clocking a Q6600 from 3.0 to 3.6 with a GTX280 makes around 1fps difference in Crysis @ 1920 x 1200

You will not get 4Ghz out of one. That is certain. If you are lucky you will get 3.6-3.75Ghz but others have maxxed out at 3.2-3.4Ghz. It's a bit of a pointless side step really and a miss-match with your high end GTX280. You would be better off with a E7400 or even better, a E8400.

Not really worth it mate. Your motherboard isn't a good overclocker anyway, so you'd struggle to get much more speed out of it.
