Hi All,

I'm looking to build a relatively cheap system to replace my current setup (4rd old intel celeron laptop) so i can actually play some games (not hardcore), use a little photoshop and the general office, browsing, unzipping, watching films, streaming etc without any problems.

I would generally agree the e7300 is much better than the e5200, but for half the price the e5200 overclocks pretty well and i don't think i really need much over 3.2+ for my needs.

- Any opinions regarding this?
- Can anybody suggest a good low priced MB that will let me overclock the e5200 to a reasonable level?

- Will most likely be running this with 4gb ram, hd4850, coolermaster 330 case, good solid heatsink (thinking scythe or just going for the standard artic)

I recently upgraded from an Athlon 64 3500+ to a E5200. Total budget was under £200 and I'm very happy with the results. Currently seeing how much I can overclock but I've got it stable at 3.3GHz on an Abit IP35 Pro XE :)
 
I was also wondering about the e5200 chips, what are they like for gaming? By gaming i mean the like of WOW etc, and what card is best suited with it?
 
@ True_Scotsman: depends on screen size but generally a hd4850 or 9800gtx and a fast processor. I Fold@home while gaming in old and BC content and still get 40-60 fps easily. WOTLK content i can only manage 10-20 while folding is running. Im using 512mb Hd4870, Athlon X2 6000+ on a 22". Havent personally used any intel chips after pentium D but the the E5 should OC to 3.5GHz easily and possibly 4Ghz.
 
Looks like i'll be going for the e5200, custompc mag recommended -
Biostar TP45 HP for a sub £100 MB (can get for £90)

How does this rate?

Also was looking at an am2 7750 BE which runs at 2.7ghz is good for overclocking, is a very similar price to the e5200, can buy a (cheaper) mb that supports am3 for the future, any views on this?

If going for a Biostar, the TPower I45 is the aim, the TP45 isn't nearly as good.

Even then, not the best pairing for the E5200, and the TPower is all about insane FSB, and the E5200s have annoyingly low FSB walls.
 
a lot of people seem to pair the e5200 with a Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L mirco atx - still seeing good overclocking results. for half the price of the biostar i'm rather tempted!
 
I've got a [email protected] on a Asus P5KC with an Expertvision HD4850 and it plays all my games(FEAR2,L4D,X3TC,Far Cry 2 etc.) on my 42" LCD HDTV at 1980x1020 on max settings or very near.

Cant see myself changing this untill Core i7 becomes affordable.
 
A £50 Gigabyte EP31 DS3L would be a fantastic motherboard to go with a E5200. They are still available for that price, you just have to look around. I would'nt be paying OCUK's prices for the E5200 either. Ridiculously pricey compared to other places even considering the free postage.

How does this compare with the Abit IP35 Pro XE that also seems very good?

Will they work/accomodate the newer graphics cards e.g. gtx260/hd4870 etc.?

I've got a 5200 and can run 3 DAoC accounts on my pc no bother with a 4850. Given that DAoC's code isn't as 'slick' as WoW's I'd say it would work just fine ;) Mine is also clocked to 3.75ghz no bother with a artic freezer
